Summary: What happens when Ohno gets lost, and meets someone who is not quite like him

Ohno slumps into his chair, feeling very tired and yet desperate at the same time. He had to do something, but he didn’t know what he had to do.

Toma stood hovering around Ohno, visibly torn between leaving Ohno to his own thoughts and placing his hand on Ohno’s shoulder as a sign of comfort. He wringed his hands nervously and paced about, trying very hard to keep quiet, but obviously, his conscience kept him from succeeding.

“I am so sorry Satoshi!” Toma burst out and knelt down in front of Ohno, where he sat. “If only I was more capable, if only I didn’t trouble you for help, “Toma gestured to indicate their current situation, “None of this would have happened!” He tried hard to avoid eye contact with Ohno.

“It’s not your fault Toma. You didn’t bring them here. It’s me. It’s all me.” Ohno rubbed his face with his hands let out a heavy sigh.

Aiba’s  head popped out from the side of door frame. He looked around cautiously and whispered, “They’re all gone right?” Ohno gave a weary nod.

Aiba tip toed into the room. “Where are the rest?”

“They’re gone.” Ohno said simply.

“Gone?” Aiba  laughed. “That Sho-chan! He must have followed Jun to the toilet to check it out! Damn, how could he! We promised we’d explore the toilet together! I’m gonna go confront him now!” Aiba turned to stomp out of the room when Ohno spoke again.

“They’re gone.” This time, Ohno said it louder, as if trying to convince himself that this is not a dream  and that he cannot wake up from it and that he has to do something about it.

“Gone? What do you mean gone? Gone shopping? Gone exploring?” Aiba forced a smile. Ohno could already see the truth sinking into Aiba, but Aiba, just like Ohno, was trying very hard to pretend otherwise.

“THEY HAVE BEEN CAPTURED DAMN IT!”  Ohno screamed angrily. The anger wasn’t directly at Aiba though. All of it was directed at himself. It was all his fault.

Aiba’s eyes shifts rapidly. “Gone…” he whispered and began to pace around the room, wringing his hands with such force that Ohno was worried he might hurt himself. “Gone, gone, gone, gone…” Aiba kept on repeating, his eyes were unseeing and he increased the speed of his pacing.

“Aiba…” Ohno called out softly but Aiba didn’t seem to have heard him.

“Aiba.” Ohno tried again, louder this time, but Aiba continued to pace even faster. He was whispering to himself, so fast, that Ohno could hear him becoming breathless with the effort. Aiba began clawing at his hands, at his arms. He would be bleeding by now if he were human.

“Aiba!” Ohno shouted and grabbed Aiba’s shoulder but he wouldn’t stop pacing, wouldn’t stop muttering, and wouldn’t stop clawing at himself. He’s going crazy. Toma stepped forward to try to restrain Aiba from hurting himself but Aiba was too strong. Toma shot Ohno a worried look.

“AIBA! STOP IT!” Ohno tackled Aiba to the ground and fell on top of him. Aiba looked mildly surprised at the sudden force and stopped muttering. He finally looked Ohno in the eye and they stayed still in that position for a while.

After what seemed like an eternity, Aiba finally couldn’t stand it anymore.

“Sho’s gone.” Aiba sat up and repeated, voice cracking towards the end.  Ohno didn’t know what else to do but to hug him really tight, hoping that that will help Aiba stay together. He felt moisture in his own eyes as he drew soothing circles on Aiba’s back, in rhythm to the most sorrowful sobs he has ever heard, wrecking through Aiba’s slender frame.

“Shhh… we’ll get them back, I promise.” Ohno repeated over and over again, as if it were a mantra. If chanting it would get Sho and Nino back, Ohno wouldn’t hesitate to do it for as long as he needs to. For the sake of Aiba’s sanity. For the sake of his own sanity.

But getting them back would be way harder and riskier than chanting a mantra.

*~*~*

“LET US GO YOU ASSHOLE!” Nino growled. But Jun continued walking ahead, as if Nino hadn’t said anything. He kicked and wriggled against the restrains on his wrist but to no avail. The burly guy was too strong. Sho just followed the guy without struggling. He’d lost all the fight in him.
“Forget it Nino. It’s no use. We’d never get away.”

“How would you know if you don’t try!” Nino challenged. His eyes were hard and determined.

“I lived in this freaking lab for the whole of my existence, you’d think I’ll not know?” Sho sighed.

“But you escaped once, you can always do it again!” Nino was still not giving up. He bent down to bite the restrains on his wrists. Too bad, robots weren’t made with razor sharp teeth. They are just plastics made to look like teeth.

“I escaped once WITH Aiba!” Sho growled, frustrated. “He’s not here now…” He trailed off. “Without him, I just can’t do it.” Sho stated.

“Argh, you’d be the death of me! Fine, go on thinking about Aiba and stay useless!”

Both of them were led into a labyrinth of corridors. They were poorly lit and the air smelt stale and rotten. Like something died in here. Nino thought. There were so many turns and they walked on and on for so long along those foreboding walls that Nino gave up trying to map out the place in his head.

They finally reached the centre of the maze, Nino assumed, and were violently shoved into a dingy old cell that smelt a hundred times worse than the corridors. Nino wanted to gag, but was thankful for the fact that he wasn’t programmed to actually vomit. The door was locked with a resounding click that reverberated ominously along the corridor. Nino stretched his arms through the bars and tried to strangle Jun, who was merely inches away, but obviously Jun wouldn’t be so stupid as to stand close enough for Nino to do that. Sho merely slid down along the wall he was leaning on and curled himself up into a ball, rocking slowly back and forth.

“How do you like it here?” Jun asked with a smirk. Oh that disgustingly pretty face, how I wish to claw his nose off and gorge his eyes out. Nino thought darkly, but otherwise stayed silent and glared at Jun.

“Please be patient, your other dear electronic friend will be joining you soon.” Jun said, as he shifted his gaze to Sho who was curled up in a corner.

Suddenly, Sho shot up and bolted to the bars holding them in, grabbing the poles so tightly that his knuckles turned white. “WHAT DID YOU DO TO AIBA?!” He shouted at Jun’s face. He tried shaking the bars but to no avail. Obviously, these poles were strengthened since they were meant to hold robots in, not humans.

“You’ll find out soon enough.” Jun chuckled and the rest of his hind men followers laughed along as well.

Sho was on the verge of tears. He knelt down suddenly, all the fight in him was gone.

“Please, Jun, you can take me for as many experiments as you like, torture me, dismantle me, anything! Just don’t hurt Aiba. Please, please, please.” Sho begged, reaching out for Jun through the bar with trembling hands.

“Stand up Sho! Don’t beg a low-life like him!” Nino whispered harshly. He tried to bring Sho to stand but Sho wouldn’t budge.

“Do you think I’d take orders from a robot?” Jun looked at Sho and smirked.

“Jun. Please.” Sho tried again, staring straight into Jun’s eyes earnestly.

Jun coughed and cleared his throat, breaking eye contact with Sho. “C’mon guys, we’ve got work to do. Let’s not waste time down here with these …robots.” With that he walked away, leaving Nino and Sho in the dark and dingy cell.

“JUN YOU BASTARD!” Nino roared.

Sho merely curled up into a ball and started rocking back and forth again, trying his hardest not to cry.

Oh Aiba, run away, please stay safe.

*~*~*

He watched as Aiba paced about and finally he couldn’t stand it.

”Aiba, can you please stop pacing and come and look at this map?” Ohno said.

Aiba looked up from staring at his feet. With a helpless sigh, he shuffled over to the table where Ohno and Toma were seated.

"Okay. Now Jun..." Ohno stopped. He was finding it hard to believe everything that had happened. How can Jun, someone who seemed to love robots, someone who seemed to genuinely want to reconcile and close the gap between humans and robots be such a traitor. Ohno didn't know whether to feel angry at such a sudden betrayal, or sad at the loss of what he thought would be a close and trusted friend. Looking at all that had happened, he began to question if this whole rescue mission was worth it. He barely knew Aiba, Sho and Nino. Who knows, they may not be who they seem, just like Jun. Ohno was beginning to find it hard to give people the benefit of the doubt. Because at the end of the day, if they're not who they seem to be, Ohno would be the one getting hurt and disappointed.

Take a leap of faith. A tiny voice in Ohno told him. Would you rather believe in them and maybe get hurt in the end, or leave them now, and spend the rest of your life, questioning and tormenting yourself, wondering if it would be better if you had believed in them from the start?

The choice was clear to him now. There was no other way.

"Jun," Ohno began again, "took Sho and Nino away. We have to get the both of them back." Aiba, at the mention of Sho, looked like he was about to cry again. Ohno patted Aiba's shoulder in comfort.

"You said you were from the lab in Nada right? Do you think Jun would have taken them back there?" Toma inquired gently.

"Yes." Aiba nodded meekly. He took a deep breath and continued, voice trembling. "That's the only place that Jun could take them actually. They always said that we are never accepted by humans and not a lot of humans know about us yet," saying this seemed to be taking a lot out of Aiba. The grimace on his face grew more and more pronounced as he ploughed on. "So Jun cannot risk taking them anywhere else. It is also the only establishment with all the proper equipment to conduct their..." Aiba gulped nervously "experiments." he whispered in fear. Aiba buried his face in his palms.

“We can get to Nada quickly, no problem! I’ll drive!” Toma interjected quickly, trying to distract Aiba before he started crying again. Ohno shot Toma a grateful look.

“Yes, we should move out quickly before they do anything to them! Right, Aiba?” Ohno asked.

“Yes, you’re right.” Aiba stood up suddenly. “Before they do anything to them.” He muttered darkly. “Let’s pack now, hurry!” Aiba began rushing around the house, looking for things that he thought they might need along their journey.

Ohno heaved a sigh of relief internally. At least with something to do instead of just sitting around wishing that Nino and Sho would come back magically, Aiba could hold on to his sanity. At least for a while. Ohno thought. He dreads to find out how Aiba would react if they were to see something they weren’t expecting to see when they reach the lab.  He dreads finding out he how he himself would react if they were to see something they weren’t expecting to see when they reach the lab.

“I’ll go get the car. Meet you two on the ground level in ten okay?” Toma rushed off even before Ohno or Aiba answered.

Ohno went around the company packing stuff that he thought they might need too, since Aiba wasn’t familiar with the company and wouldn’t know where things are kept. Before long, the pair was squashed into a single capsule and zooming down the Common Tower towards the ground floor.

Toma was already waiting in the car when they hit ground floor.
“C’mon Aiba, let’s go.” Both Ohno and Aiba scrambled into the car and Toma drove off, speeding like never before.

We have to save them. Because Ohno has a lot of things to tell Nino. He can’t just leave their previous confrontation hanging like that. We cannot fail.

But the problem is, how?
