Summary: What happens when Ohno gets lost, and meets someone who is not quite like him

“Let me down Oh-chan…” Aiba muttered weakly.

“Listen to yourself! You don’t even have the energy to speak, much less walk!” Ohno chided, growing breathless. He makes a conscious effort to make his breathing sound even so that Aiba will not feel bad. Aiba is actually heavier than he looks. Well, it shouldn’t come as a surprise to Ohno. Metals are heavier than flesh after all.

They are nearing the lab and in a few more paces, they will reach the lab’s entrance.

Alright, a few more steps to go! Ohno encouraged himself.

“Why aren’t there any guards at the entrance?” No one was in sight. Ohno was confused. Isn’t this lab supposed to be top secret? Shouldn’t there be more sentinels prowling about the compound, keeping guard?

“Not many people know about this lab so they don’t really need to worry about intruders.” Aiba huffed. “But of course, they have surveillance cameras everywhere as preventive measures as well. Turn here.”

“Turn…?” Ohno asked, puzzled.

“Yeah turn. We can’t just serve ourselves up on a silver platter can we?  Even I know that. I wonder why they always say I’m the stupid one. See, I’m pretty smart too aren’t I” Aiba smiled weakly.

Ohno laughed quietly at Aiba’s comment. As he carries Aiba on his back, he turns to the direction Aiba pointed and continues walking. Soon, they neared the barbed wire fence surrounding the compound.

“Okay, put me down.” Aiba ordered.

Ohno raised his eyebrows.

“Yes, here.” Aiba confirmed breathlessly.

Ohno shrugged and deposited Aiba gently on the ground.

“Okay, here I go!”

Before Ohno can even ask what Aiba meant by that, he watches Aiba rub his hands together vigorously. Then, he holds a part of the wire fence in both hands and that part of the wire turns red and melts away.

Ohno stares with his mouth open.

“Robot power!” Aiba laughs. He proceeds to melt the surrounding fence until a hole, big enough for them to fit through, is created.

“Wow, thanks Aiba!” Ohno says in awe.

“No problem!” Aiba gives him a mock salute. But he seems weaker than before, his voice is now even softer and he can’t even stand properly by himself.

Ohno hurries to support Aiba. “Are you okay?” Ohno asks, worried.

“Yeah, yeah.” Aiba answers dismissively. “We have to get to the battery reserves soon though, I don’t think I can hold up much longer.” Aiba grimaced.

“Okay, okay! Let’s hurry!”

Together, they make their way through the hole and into the compounds of the lab.

If not for the fact that they’re indeed on a rescue mission, Ohno would have stopped to admire his surroundings. They always say, they grass is greener on the other side. The grass is indeed GREENER on this side. Ohno thought. Their green is that of such a brilliant shade that Ohno is almost convinced that they can glow in the dark. Surrounding the ominous iron building that is the lab, there are flowers everywhere, in all shades imaginable. It is like a secret fantasy garden and Ohno cannot help but stare in admiration and awe.

“Chemicals.” Aiba offered as an explanation. “Everything here isn’t natural.”

“Oh.” Ohno nodded, disappointed.

“Careful!” Aiba stops abruptly and stays still. Ohno follow suit and look towards the direction that Aiba seem to be looking.

There, on the base of a potted plant hanging against the wall of the building, is a surveillance camera, its lens swiveling left and right slowly.

“Those cameras track movements.” Aiba explains. “So long as we don’t get into their field of view in the first place, they won’t be able to capture us.”

“Okay.” Ohno hummed in acknowledgement. This is tricky business. Ohno can’t help imagining himself as the main lead in an action-pack thriller movie.

“Now! Let’s go!” As the lens points at the other direction, the pair rushes to hide in a blind spot as indicated by Aiba.

“Go!”

“Go!”

“Go!”

The cycle of stopping, staying still and rushing to yet another blind spot continued for a few rounds until they reach an inconspicuous door that seem to lead to the inside of the lab. Aiba is now leaning heavily against Ohno. Ohno can feel himself staggering under the additional weight.

On the door, it says “Unauthorized personnel prohibited. Trespassers will be prosecuted.”

Aiba looks at the sign and snorted. “Like that has ever stopped me.”

From the back pocket of his jeans, Aiba withdraws a hairpin.

“Why do you have that?” Ohno asks, staring wide-eyed at Aiba’s resourcefulness.

“I stole it from one of the lab assistant’s hair when I was here the last time. You’ll never know when you will need these things. See, now’s a perfect example!”

Aiba kneels down in front of the door, level his eyes with the keyhole, inserts the tip of the hairpin into the keyhole and started twisting that piece of metal.

“What if someone’s inside there!” Ohno asks, alarmed.

“Nah, it’s not recharging time for the robots yet. Well, maybe I’m assuming too much, thinking that they’ll bring the electric packs for recharging to Sho and Nino at the same time every day, like what they did for Sho and I. But things around here are pretty much like clockwork, so long as there are no disturbances, there won’t be changes either. A hah!” The door unlocks with a click, revealing a small but brightly lit room. Aiba pumps his fist in triumph.

Ohno ushers Aiba in and closes the door before anyone spots them. It is a simple room with white washed walls, tiled floors and no windows. Many palmed- sized packets were stacked neatly against the walls. Ohno assumes that they are the electric packs that Aiba had been talking about.

“Okay, quick, you need to recharge!” Ohno mutters as he grabs an electric pack offhandedly from the stack, looks at it for a while before passing it to Aiba because he is unsure of how the entire recharging business works.

Aiba wheezes and his eyes look droopier than ever. He takes a deep breath, as if garnering the minute amounts of electrical energy left in his body to his hands, and tore the packaging of the packet apart. “Argh, this can’t be helped,” Aiba mutters and he lifts up his shirt to reveal his belly button. Rummaging through the insides of the packet, Aiba withdraws his hand to reveal an umbilical cord looking wire. He connects that wire to his belly button and sighs in relief.

Oh, this is how they recharge! Ohno turns away, suddenly feeling embarrassed. He figures that he should give Aiba some privacy, but he had seen everything so he wonders what’s the point of turning away only now.

“What to do,” Aiba sighs deeply and wonders out loud. “When they take stocks and find out that one electric packet is missing, they’d definitely know that something is wrong and will kick up a big fuss and…” Aiba trails off.

Ohno frowns, stricken. They’d be found out in the end despite all that sneaking around earlier. They’ve wasted their efforts in trying to be stealthy after all. He turns around, expecting to find a depressed looking Aiba.

What he did not expect, is an Aiba who is grinning so widely that it looks like it hurts.

“What?” Ohno asks, nonplussed.

“I’ve got an idea!” Aiba almost shouts.

Ohno lunges forward to slap his hand over Aiba’s mouth in an attempt to keep him quiet.

Suddenly, they heard a beep. The pair turns, to find a surveillance camera at the corner of the room pointing right at them.

“I guess we have to deal with that too.”

*~*~*

Nino slumps in the corner of the cell, feeling lethargic. It’s close to three days now, ever since they were thrown into the cell. His energy is running out. The last time he charged was back home in Mir.

Nino peers through his weary eyes and sees Sho sprawled on the ground as well. Mustering his energy, he nudges Sho’s unmoving body with his foot.

“Are you still alive?”

Sho grunted in reply.

Oh, Nino thought. Sho’s body received damage previously and a damaged body cannot retain electrical energy as well as a fully functioning one. He’s energy is running out faster than Nino’s. Sho’s almost gone.

The faint sounds of two sets of footsteps were carried through the corridors of the labyrinth to the cell. Nino sat up immediately. Well, not exactly immediately, but as fast as his almost wasted body allowed. Sho remains sprawled on the ground, too weak to even move.

Nino heard them speaking, before he even sees them.

“Are you sure you counted properly?!” An unfamiliar voice says.

“Yes I’m dead sure! You can count them yourself if you don’t believe me.” A second unfamiliar voice huffs indignantly.

“Who’s the idiot in the shift before ours!” The first voice groans. “Why is there a missing pack! He’s gonna get us into trouble.”

“If I ever find out who that idiot is, he’s a goner, I swear!” The second voice threatens. “And what was he thinking? Forgetting to slide the green lock back into place, leaving the door open!”

“Obviously that idiot wasn’t thinking.” The other one sighs. “We’re reaching.” He shushes his colleague. “Keep quiet.” He warns.

Too late, I’ve heard everything. Nino smirks to himself.

The two guards took a turn and they came into the field of Nino’s view. In their hands, they have two electrical reserve packets. Tentatively, they step up to the bars separating them from the robots.

Nino stood up and moves towards them suddenly. The two guards threw the packets at Nino immediately and staggered back several steps, backing themselves against the opposite wall, staring at Nino in both fear and disgust.

What assholes. Nino rolls his eyes. He’d seen way too many retarded humans to even be offended by their narrow-mindedness and lack of knowledge. Bending down, he gathers the two packets into his arms and glares at the two guards. The two guards stumble away, eager to get away from Nino.

Sitting himself down with a sigh, Nino tore the packaging of one of the packs, retrieves the umbilical cord looking wire and attaches it to his belly button. He hums in relief as he feels electricity zipping through his limbs, regaining control of his body. When he feels up to it, he crawls toward Sho and flips him over. He tore the packaging off the other pack, and attaches the wire to Sho’s belly button too. Slowly, Sho’s eyes flicker open.

Nino lets Sho rests for a while.

After a few minutes, Nino looks at Sho expectantly.

“So, did you hear what they said?” Nino could hardly keep the grin off his face.

“Yeah.” Sho grins back. “Told you they’ll come for us.”

“They came for you, not me.”

Sho shakes his head and smiles “You’ll see.”

They sat around for a while more, waiting for the recharge to be complete.

Finally, when the recharge is done, Sho pulls the wire away from his belly button and began feeling the walls of the cell with his hand. “Time to do some work.”

“What are you doing?” Nino stares at Sho in bewilderment.

“Don’t ask why. You’ll know why later. Just help me find an electrical source for now.”

The two of them began feeling the walls with their hands.

“Here you go.” Nino found one on the innermost wall of the cell and steps back to allow Sho forward.

Sho places his palm over the electrical source and stares into space. Nino watches burst of electrical sparks flashes across Sho’s eyes in rhythmic pulses.

“Argh that idiot.” Sho slaps his hand to his forehead.

“What?” Nino squats down beside Sho, anxious to know what Sho found out.

“Aiba and Ohno managed to infiltrate the compounds. Aiba was the one who used up one of the electrical reserve packet, that’s why they have one missing in the warehouse, like what the guards have said.” Sho couldn’t help smiling. “And that green lock, was Aiba’s work. It is just a prank that Aiba always likes to play on the guards whenever he manages to sneak into the reserves room. Aiba’s favourite colour is green. And I’d bet that he sneaked into the surveillance room to loop a video of us mopping in the cell, so that the guards wouldn’t catch us suspiciously feeling the walls for electrical source.” Sho reminisces fondly. “When we were younger, we used to run around the lab, because Jun let us,” Sho’s face visibly darkened at the mention of Jun’s name. “Anyway, we came up with codes using electrical pulses so that we can communicate with one another through electrical sources whenever we’re not together.” Sho puffs his chest out proudly at the mention of their ingenious way of communication. “And Aiba, that idiot, told me to go to the secret passageway on the night of the full moon, which I can see because we’re stuck in the dungeon and have no access to the view of the moon.” Sho shakes his head in frustration.

“It’s tonight.” Nino states.

“What?” Sho asks, puzzled.

“The night of the full moon. It’s tonight. I have the habit of tracking the moon cycle since I was out in the wilds for quite some time and have to make sure that I don’t run out of electrical reserves.” Nino offered.  “And the secret passageway you were talking about?” Nino probed.

“Well, it works like this…”

*~*~*

“Ouch! You’re stepping on my foot!”

“Oh my god, sorry Oh-chan!” Aiba shifts his foot only to elbow Ohno in the ribs as he moves. Ohno grunts in pain.

Aiba hugs Ohno as his way of apologizing and tries to press himself into the earthy wall, giving Ohno as much space as he can manage.

After running around the compounds of the lab, unlocking the green lock in the reserves room, looping the video in the surveillance room and almost getting themselves caught on several occasions, the pair made their way to the secret passageway, which was a link between the cell in the dungeon and the outside world.
“Do you think they got the message?” Ohno asks.

They are now squished up against the door situated in the middle of the secret passageway, separating Aiba and Ohno from Sho and Nino. The secret passageway was just a tunnel, only a metre tall and a metre wide.

“I’m quite sure Sho would be smart enough to check for my message from an electric source.” However Aiba looked unconvinced himself.

Ohno carefully shifted around and sat down, making himself comfortable as he thought that this might be a long wait. Aiba follow suit.

They waited for close to an hour before rapt knocking was heard on the old wooden door.

Ohno thought it sounded like music to his ears.
