Get rid… get rid…the key…
*~*~*
“What…” Ohno starts, but seems to have some problems finishing the sentence.
Jun finally looks up from the file and regards Ohno with worried eyes.
“What does this mean?” Ohno wheezes.
“I…” Jun doesn’t know how to break it to him. From the time that he had spent with Ohno, he has gathered that there must be something important to Ohno in Nada. That’s why Ohno has been so determined to get there.
Suspected to be last seen in Nada, on the night of the massacre of the Town’s Head.
Jun doesn’t know exactly what transpired on that night. But it doesn’t take a genius to figure out that it is definitely not anything good. With it being a massacre and all. And somehow, he has a feeling that Ohno is related to the Town’s Head.
Jun lets out a deep sigh and rubs his face hard with his hands. Ohno is waiting for answers with a blank stare. Jun sighs again and paces away from Ohno, only to pace back again after a few steps.
“I think… Nino might be responsible for the massacre of the Nada’s town head.” Jun gulps. “I suppose this hadn’t been out in the papers when it happened because the lab would try to keep it hushed. They can’t allow news of a robot committing murder to be out in the public, because that will be the end of the lab. But robots aren’t supposed to kill… Maybe something agitated Nino leading to this accident… I’m sure it’s an accident and not intentional… maybe it’s not Nino at all…” Ohno could no longer hear Jun’s voice. All he could hear was his heavy breathing and all he could see is red. He doesn’t even know what he’s feeling anymore. Anger? Disbelief? Heartache? Maybe a mix of everything
It hurts.
Ohno is clenching his fists so tightly, his knuckles are turning white. Damn right it hurts. It hurts so badly, Ohno doesn’t know what to do with himself.
“Ohno-san…” Jun looks at Ohno worriedly. “Calm down okay? I know it hurts but you need to calm down and think it through before you do anything rash…”
Do you? Do you really know how much this hurts? Ohno glares at Jun. Jun flinches. Ohno knows that it is wrong for him to direct his anger at Jun, but he can’t help it.
“How would you know how badly it hurts?” Ohno whispers, looking at the ground, staring at his battered shoes.
“I…” Jun is stumped.
“Have you ever loved someone so much, you thought you could do anything for them?” Ohno looks up and stares at Jun, with eyes that seem to be begging Jun to understand. For someone to understand.
“Have you ever loved someone so much, you don’t care whether they’re human or not, you don’t care what other people might think of you falling in love with someone like that, you don’t care how impossible the future might be…” Hot tears starts to form in Ohno’s eyes as he speaks with increasing volume and vehement.
“Because…” Ohno’s voice cracks as the tears finally spills out from his eyes and rolls down his cheeks. “Because as long as we’re together, everything would be okay.” Ohno sobs.
He staggers backwards until his back hit one of the shelves. “Everything would be okay…” Ohno repeats. He slides along the shelf, down to the ground until he is seated on the floor and buries his face in his hands, trying hard to stifle his sobs but failing miserably.
Jun stands to the side, uncomfortable and unsure what to do, how to console the man in front of him.
Ohno looks up, but now with anger in his eyes. “But everything is not okay, when a sick twist of fate decides that its funny for me to find out that the one that I loved murdered the only family who mattered to me.” The edge in Ohno’s voice is unmistakable.
“Ohno!” Jun shouts.
Ohno is up and out of the door before Jun registers his sudden movement.
*~*~*
“Ne, Sho-chan?”
“Hmmm?”
“Do you think they’d be okay?” Aiba asks worriedly.
“They will be.” Sho reassures him with a smile. “Ohno and Nino love each other as much as we do.”
“That’s good.” Aiba forces a smile, wanting to believe in what Sho said.
Suddenly, a loud bang from the violent slam of a door could be heard.
“What’s that?” Aiba straightens up.
Sho shrugs. “Should we check it out?” He asks.
“Yeah we probably should.” Aiba agrees, looking scared.
Holding hands, the pair of robots tiptoes outside the room with The Wisp. The corridor is empty. No robots, humans nor mutants in sight.
“I think the sound came from there.” Aiba points to his right.
The pair walk as quietly as they can, with their backs pressed against the wall.
Soon, they approach a janitor’s room and they can hear faint noises coming from the room. Noises that sounds like someone causing a wreck inside.
With eyes wide open, the pair hurries to the janitor’s room.
“Nino!” AIba shouts!
Inside the janitor’s room, Nino could be seen through the little glass pane on the door, running around the small confined area, slamming against the door in a desperate attempt to get out. His eyes are flashing, though only mildly, his hair is wild. He looks tired and angry at the same time.
“What happened to Nino?” Sho turns the door knob only to find that it is locked.
“Who locked Nino in!” Aiba pushes Sho aside and fumbles with the doorknob himself.
Nino is now banging on the door, as if trying to get Sho and Aiba’s attention.
Aiba places his hand at the bottom of the glass pane, trying to indicate to Nino that he’s gotten his attention.
“What is it Nino?” Aiba mouths.
Nino’s mouth moves and he seems to be saying something, something that he desperately wants the two outside to know.
“I can’t hear you!” Aiba is getting flustered as the second ticks by. “Don’t worry we’ll get you out!” Aiba speaks slowly, so that Nino can read his lips.
But at that, Nino seems to get even more flustered, banging at the door with renewed vigor.
Aiba couldn’t understand. What is it that Nino wants?
Sho gently pulls Aiba away from the door so that he can get a better look.
Sho, who is calmer than Aiba, stares at Nino steadily, willing him to relax. Nino, although struggling, seems to have gotten the message and stops throwing himself at the door.
“Speak to me Nino.” Sho says slowly, moving his lips elaborately.
Nino says something. But Sho didn’t get it. He shakes his head, indicating for Nino to repeat.
“Don’t…” Sho mouths after Nino.
“Don’t?” Aiba is almost shouting with frustration. “Don’t what!?”
“Aiba calm down!” Sho shushes Aiba while reading Nino’s lips, trying to figure out what he is saying.
“Don’t…let…”Sho reads. Aiba presses himself against the glass pane to help decipher too.
“me… out…” Aiba finishes.
“Don’t let me out.” Sho pieces them all together. “Don’t let me out.” He repeats.
“What does he mean by don’t let me out?!” Aiba puzzles. “Doesn’t he want to get out after someone had locked him in?”
They hear footsteps down the corridor, coming towards them.
“Quick! Hide!” Sho whispers urgently. He pulls Aiba along with him and turns a corner, making sure to remain hidden from the approaching newcomer.
As the person gets closer, they realise that it is only Ohno.
“Oh-chan!” Aiba shouts and waves at him. But Ohno seems to not hear him.
The two robots emerge from their hiding spot to join Ohno.
“Nino is in the janitor’s room! Someone locked him in!”
That though, seems to have gotten Ohno’s attention. Ohno stops abruptly in his tracks and looks around for the janitor’s room.
Aiba and Sho reach Ohno.
Ohno spots the janitor’s room and his facial features harden upon the sight of Nino. He fumbles with the doorknob too.
“We’ve tried, Oh-chan. But the door wouldn’t budge.” Aiba says regretfully.
“Yeah, Ohno. We tried, but it wouldn’t open. We need to find the key. Don’t worry! Nino’s safe in there, we’d get him out somehow!” Sho tries to reassure Ohno.
Ohno turns to him. “Safe? I don’t care whether he’s safe or not.” Sho furrows his eyebrows in confusion.
“I want to kill him.”
Aiba gasps.
Ohno begins to slam himself against the door, in an attempt to break it down.
“What are you doing?!” Aiba tries pulling Ohno away from the door but he is too weak. He is running low on battery since he recharged two days ago. Sho, who is much stronger, because he just recharged, locked his arms around Ohno and pulls him away from the door. Ohno, knowing that his strength cannot match that of a recently-charged robot, gives up almost immediately and slumps in Sho’s arms.
Through the glass pane, Nino finally realizes that Ohno is just standing right outside. Nino looks at Ohno with pleading eyes and for a moment their eyes met and lock on to one another. Slowly, Nino backs into the corner of the room and squats down, wrapping his arms around his knees tightly, locking them. He seems to be having trouble keeping still.
Suddenly, Ohno realises what Nino is trying to do.
No one locked Nino in. Nino locked himself in. He's trying to stay away from everyone else so that he wouldn't be able to harm anyone in his current state.
Aiba and Sho seem to have understood what is happening as well. "No wonder he didn't want us to let him out." Aiba breathes.
From the glass pane, Nino seems to be losing his control. There seems to be some sort of internal conflict going on within him. The beast in him trying to break out and rip the three standing outside into shreds. But the real Nino, the Nino that Ohno fell in love with, is trying to keep control. Nino begins to fling his head backwards repeatedly, against the wall, as if trying to knock himself out.
"Nino!" Ohno shouts, alarmed. He fumbles with the lock desperately, trying to get to Nino.
It was then, that they heard a guttural growl from the direction where Ohno came. All three of them whip their heads in that direction and is horrified to be staring at the all-too-familiar pair of glowing red orbs.
“Shit.” Sho curses.
The three of them scrambles for the nearest door, which is the door to the room with The Wisp.
The mutant ambles its way down the corridor, minding its own business.
Inside the janitor’s room, Nino is still making a lot of noise, slamming his head against the wall.
“Oh damnit Nino! Keep quiet!” Aiba wrings his hands anxiously. Sho and Aiba tries to get a view of the mutant's movements while Ohno remains slumped on the floor, where Sho had left him.
The noises that Nino is making attracts the mutant’s attention and before they know it, the mutant is standing right outside the janitor’s room, staring through the glass pane, at Nino.
“Oh god…” Aiba breathes, horrified.
The mutant scratches at the door, in its futile attempts to get to Nino. But fortunately, the door remains sturdy.
Sho heaves a sigh of relief. “I think Nino is safe.” He nods at Aiba. “The doors in this lab are quite strong.” Sho recalls the painful memories, when he tried to break down doors to get to Aiba in the past.
“Yeah.” Aiba agrees. “But we have another problem.” Aiba shifts his gaze to Ohno.
Sho squats down beside Ohno’s limp figure. “What happened?” He inquires gently.
Ohno stares blankly into space. Sho waits patiently for Ohno to answer. Just as he thought that Ohno is never going to respond, Ohno speaks.
“He…”
“Yeah?” Aiba prompts. “What happened? Nino chased after you, when you left the room. He wanted to apologize. He was a wreck.”
Ohno shakes his head miserably. He can feel a sob bubbling up his chest. Ohno hates feeling like this. So helpless, at the mercy of his own emotions.
“Nino, he came.” Ohno’s tears starts to well up again as he recalls with familiarity, at how easily Nino’s name rolls off his tongue. How nice it sounded, to hear his own voice, saying his name.
“But he went crazy.” Ohno couldn’t help but let the sob escape. Sho and Aiba look at each other in confusion. Crazy?
“I played the piano, and he went crazy. He charged at me, trying to kill me. Jun and I, we hid in room and we found Nino’s file.” Ohno gulps for air as wrecking sobs causes his exhausted frame to tremble.
“Nino killed my grandmother.” Ohno whispers, horrified. Saying it out hurts as much, or even more than when he first found out. The harshness of the truth punches him in the gut, leaving him breathless.
“Oh…” Aiba didn’t know what to say. Everything is as confusing as it is. Why did Nino go crazy? Why did Nino kill Ohno’s grandmother?
"But," Ohno sits up and looks at both Aiba and Sho with desperate eyes. "It wasn't the real Nino who killed my grandmother!" Ohno grabs Sho's hands beseechingly, as if begging him to believe what he is saying. "It's the beast in him. The real Nino wouldn't kill anyone." Ohno says, trying to convince himself as well.
Sho pats Ohno hands in a consoling manner.
"Please Sho, we've got to save Nino." Ohno's voice cracks on Nino's name.
Just then, a great crack could be heard.
Sounding like a door being wrenched off its hinges.
Shit.
