Thanks for the comment on my maiden voyage into slashdom. We Navy fans are so depressed by the virtual destruction of Norrington's character, we must keep up out spirits somehow. Felaine
The movies have certainly taken a different turn, and the absence of Gillette and Groves will definitely be felt -- they were both great characters. Though I didn't love Gillette until you made him so wonderfully human. Wanda and Honorat were having a discussion about Gillette in a post at Black Pearl Sails and I kept thinking about the way you write that character. You don't gloss over his faults, but you point out his positive attributes as well. It's a brilliant characterisation, the best kind of fanfiction, starting from rather scant source material and building on it until it's someone we recognize as a complete person.
Oh lovely - three times lovely ! such a beautiful sweet image to start my morning ! ROTFL for the bewigged pigs infesting James' dreams. I can almost smell the lavander-scent myself. And Andrew is always so attentive and clever ;) Thank you so much for this ! (and as I do not like the word slash, I'd say instead that you've written, with just a few perfectly chosen words, a wonderful male/male romance).
That's what I was aiming for; glad you enjoyed my feeble effort to keep up our spirits. I didn't know you disliked the term "slash". That very interesting, as a pirate would say. Any particular reason? I'm just accustomed to using the term in fandom. Since this differs from my usual drabbles, and some deprived readers might not know what Gillington is, I thought I'd better be certain no one got into material they didn't want. Felaine
Oh, about the word slash it's just a foible of mine. As I suppose you know, I'm not a native English speaker and there are huge differences in the pronunciation rules of the English and Italian language, so "how" an English word sounds is always something I lend particular attention. The main reason I do not like "slash" it's because it has a rather harsh sound. But there is another reason, more "theorical". Although entirely suited for certain sort of fics (basically the PWPs and those heavily focusing on the graphics of sex), I find the definition "slash" a bit reductive when applied to the fics we usually read in this community. They're fics where the focus is on the characters' feelings (and on good writing^^). The fact that the romance is between persons of the same sex is just one of the issues explored by the writers. But I entirely agree about the need to warn the readers about the content, considered that personal attitudes towards sexual orientation may greatly differ. :)
