Haunting perhaps? Wouldn't surprise me, I am a medium of sorts.

The combination of a smell of smoke and a thermostat resetting itself suggest a problem with your HVAC system. Something may be burned out in the thermostat itself, or in the furnace, and it's causing the thermostat to reset itself. Is it digital, or an old analog thing you have to physically turn to a temperature setting?

It's an old analog switch and I did check the furnace to see if everything was alright. It may seem like a jump to conclusions but I do try and find reasonable explanations for these things.

The smell was cigarette smoke, localized to the living room, my first thought was someone had come over had a smoke while waiting for me and left. But I don't know anyone who would be that rude to do that in my house.

The ending line of the post was more for my amusement than as an explanation of the problem. I am into the paranormal and I have seen and felt things that are so out of the ordinary that I believe in ghosts--just not the usual explanations for them.

Oh, also, some utilities have a service whereby they remotely reset your thermostat to a higher setting during certain hours. However, you have to opt in for that.
