LJ moving to Russian servers; I'm moving to DW

Dec 30, 2016 21:20

Basically, LiveJournal is migrating from a server farm in California to one in Russia. Quality of service aside, it means LiveJournal will no longer have to abide by US laws - in freedom of speech, privacy, user protection, data transparency, intellectual property - or anything at all. For details, see rahirah's recent post.

I'm not panicking about this, I guess, since this process has been going on since 2009. Changes happen here, doesn't always mean the end of the world. So I'll be one of those remaining on LJ.

I do have a DW account as snogged. My LJ is backed up there. You can friend me there if you want, but I can't guarantee that I'll check it often.

The HTTPS entry points going away (see rahirah's post) is the absolute last straw for me. Deliberate downgrade on security in this day and age is really suspicious. Hopefully we're all panicking for nothing, but...well, personally I did not find 2016 to inspire a whole lot of hope.

So let me ask you: do you remember to type in http://www. when you go to any site?

Or do you type in google.com knowing that the server is going to take you there anyway?

I'm not an IT person or techie, but I do know (from my husband) that 'www' is not really required in today's day and age.

Her post indicates that the payment page is still secure so financially you're safe. I also recommend using Paypal if you're not doing that already.

I just don't see how mass exodus and panic solves things.

You're right, panic does not solve things. But making the right choices to protect yourself does. Not giving my business to companies that do not protect consumer rights makes a stand, sends a direct message. I'm making the choice to reject LJ and embrace DW, even if the latter feels very foreign right now ( ... )

I've also created an account on DW, same name, and already added you (um, I think; not so sure with the weird DW account...). I'm going to crosspost from DW, but still plan to stay here for the communities.

Lol I'll check. It feels so different on DW, doesn't it? BUT it feels a lot less different than Tumblr, so I'm sure I'll get the hang of it sooner or later.
