I've had a few cats that sleep belly up because they were comfortable. That was our first sign that our cat Stewie was sick, when he started sleeping curled up in a ball again instead of flat on his back. One of our current cats is a big cat and winds up laying on his back because his belly's too big for him to stay on his side. The kitten, properly named Fizzgig, has been comfortable since the first time my husband picked her up. She exposes her belly to him a lot.
We did find her outside, and it was really cold, so the keeping warm factor makes a lot of sense. :D
