She was naked, falling, nothing surrounding her but the pale sky. No land or even a cloud in sight, the wind was warm over her bare skin as words echoed through her mind.

Beautiful goddess, fell from heaven

The voice was indistinct, not one she recognized. "It must not have been heaven, or I wouldn't have left." Her response was clear and firm.

Man-shaped weights strapped to flashing feet

"It was my choice. I wasn't dragged anywhere." She didn't know what events her words referred to; only that they were true.

Why didn't you take me with you?

Ah, but she knew that voice. "I thought it was best." Still falling--but faster now, the air cooler and damper, clinging to her skin.

If you find me a pair of jeans that fit, I'll love you forever.

"Liar," she murmured, closing her eyes at the pang that shot through her. "You forgot." She fell faster still, her limbs no longer weightless, and the sky deepening to a more intense blue.

No matter what you know...be careful with it. I don't think many of us would be able to take it if something happened to you, too.

"I was careful." She sighed, feeling the weight of responsibility settle on her. "But not enough, I guess."

I doubt anyone can take you on and win.

She barked a short, harsh laugh. "Clearly, you were wrong." Bastet had been preparing for her own death for months; she only hoped it had made a difference.

Faster and faster she fell through the vibrant blue, wind rushing in her ears. She could see ground now, green and brown, stretching vast and featureless. It ended abruptly, a thin white line all that separated it from a black void.

She closed her eyes, flexing her fingers and toes with a sigh. She flash-stepped towards the ground, the first movement she'd made of her own accord since her fall had begun.

You foresaw all this?

She landed lightly, vaguely resenting the pull of gravity on her body. Even so, her shoulders straightened under the burdens she could feel settling on them; a substantial, familiar weight she quickly became accustomed to.

A translucent wall stood about five or six meters in front of her, stretching off in either direction as far as she could see. From here on the ground, she could make out, hanging in the formless black beyond it--

A glass sphere. With a tree inside. And while it shouldn't have been possible from this distance, she could see movement among the leaves and boughs, indicating the life within.

What a creepy person.

She snorted, digging her bare toes into the dirt. "You're one to talk." She shot forward, spinning to launch a kick at the wall in front of her. It shattered from the impact, translucent shards twinkling as they floated in the black beyond the ground on which she stood.

With no hesitation, she leaped through the hole, powerful legs driving her through empty space back towards the Sphere. The Tree. Those still waiting for her.
