Result of today's ODI:
England 270-7 West Indies 244-7
England win by 1 run (D/L)
England scored 270 runs with 7 outs. West Indies had 244 runs on 7 outs before time ran out (time is determined by sunlight).
In short, this is a game where each team gets 300 bowls to make as many runs as they can. If you study it hard enough, the game has some striking resemblances to baseball (and is just as strange to someone whose never seen baseball).
Anyway, the light at the field got bad, so they estimated what the West Indies would have done had they been able to get the last 22 bowls in. The estimation is done by the Duckworth-Lewis method. According to that method, The West Indies would have scored 269 runs, so they lost by one.
It seems to be the only game where if time runs out, they rely on statistical summaries to get to the end of the game. I wonder if a team can just use D/L if the other team batted poorly.
This doesn't work in the 5 day Cricket match (yes, 5 days for one match). If the game isn't finished by the end of the 5th day, the match is a draw, nobody wins.
