Summitt Energy = Evil

May 07, 2008 12:45

The other day a man came to the door, claiming to be hired by the city to ensure that the local hydro company was charging us the correct amount, and asked me to sign a form saying that he could come by now and then and check the meters. This turned out not be true, and he actually worked for a company called Summitt Energy, and he really wanted ( Read more... )

Universal Power is another shady one. They seemed on the up and up initially, and did actually save me some money while I was with them, but despite their assurances that leaving a 5 year contract is no problem if you're moving to a place with utilities included, I've been getting the runaround with collections agencies and lost faxes and changing required documents since August.

I've managed to get the collections agents just as irritated at them as I am, though. I consider this progress. :P

I have also read about Universal Power salesmen as well - they seem to often be as misrepresentative of who they are and what they're selling as Summitt. I'm glad I caught on what was going on this time before it was too late - I also filed a complaint with the Ontario Energy Board.

Keep up the good fight with the collection agents!

Oh yes. Here is the post I made about my encounter with Universal Energy, a similar type of scam.

I refuse to sign anything from anyone who comes to my door, even if he and his documentation claim to be a charity for feeding leprous children of mianmar. You never know what you might actually be agreeing to. Default position: accept the literature, and do an investigation.

Interesting... not as fun of a confrontation as I was hoping for, but oh well. :-)

According to Kitchener-Wilmot Hydro, there are 13 companies that can offer hydro, although Universal and Summitt are the only one's I've heard of (I guess because of their infamy.) I'm curious to see who else will drop by at some point in time.

you know, here in the states, you can shoot people in your house if you don't like them.

i suppose you could do that in canada too.

in fact, i bet you'd face similar penalties in either country.

so don't shoot those guys. but you might be able to pee on their contracts. is it considered indecent exposure if you're doing it in your own home?

Actually, in the states you -are- allowed to protect you property with violence, while in Canada you are not.

We were thinking the best way to deal with these people is to invite them in, and talk to them about what they're doing, and introduce Jesus to them. :-)

It would be fun to try, at least!
