Thunder only happens when it's raining

A question: why do people like Glee? The point seems to be taking music one loves and ruining it with sanitized, plastic performances. The stars can all carry a tune, assuming one gives them a bucket, but I'm left wholly cold by their lip-synching to studio recordings.

So I ask again: why on earth is this considered entertaining?

I know my mother likes it because she loves all things musical theater, so it's not so much the aspects of the performance but the way the songs might resonate (or not) with the plot.

(My mother also likes American Idol, Dancing with the Stars and other music/dance game shows/reality shows.)

I haven't seen an episode, so I can't judge.

I have a few issues with Glee, but it's a guilty pleasure. Maybe I enjoy it more because I *don't* like their song choices as much. And I think it does have some funny moments.

"Hey, you know that thing you like? Yeah, it sucks."

(I've never watched Glee).
