Character Name: Maxxie Oliver

Canon source: Skins

PB: Mitch Hewer. He looks like this. IT'S A VERY LARGE PICTURE I'M SORRY.

Personality:If there's one word to describe Maxxie Oliver, it's "charming." He comes off as a very playful person - he's flirty and friendly and he generally has a wide grin on his face. Even though he wears his heart on his sleeve, his mood is relatively stable. While he isn't the sharpest tack, and could be considered an airhead to some, he can be clever and is usually good for a laugh. In fact, sitting around and having a smoke with his friends is probably when he's happiest.

Despite the fact that he's happy most of the time, he can be mistaken for overemotional because of how he handles being angry or upset. When he's angry, he can be very vocal about it, and when he's upset he tends to let it eat away at him until it's resolved. People don't often find anything to dislike about Maxxie, but he does tend to lose control a little in those situations.

The other thing about Maxxie is that he can be a little conceited sometimes. Often this is played off as a slightly bloated level of confidence, but he does take a lot of interest in himself and the way he looks. He likes looking good, and thanks to years of positive reinforcement, he knows how to use his looks to get who and what he wants. However, this has lead to more and more positive reinforcement, and while he generally doesn't make much of it, he is very sensitive to anyone calling him out on what could be perceived as slutty behaviour. He's very aware of the fact that one might be completely justified in calling him a bit of a tramp, and he can and will get very upset if one does so. However, he gets more upset by the fact that someone might be looking down on him for it, rather than any implication that the fun he's having is bad in any way. He'll acknowledge his mistakes, but he doesn't necessarily think that sleeping around as much as he does is a terrible thing. He just knows that other people think it's a terrible thing, which in turn makes him worry that they might dislike him for that reason.

Despite this, Maxxie professes over and over again that he doesn't care what anyone thinks. Like everything else, he is so genuine about it that he is also very convincing. In the end, Maxxie does what he wants to do, purely because he wants to do it, and no one will change his mind. This is obvious enough when he decides to pursue dance - he believes in himself to the point where he refuses the idea that he could ever fail. Maybe he knows that if he doubts himself, he'll never get what he wants, but in any case, Maxxie's confidence is one of his greatest strengths, although it could be considered a weakness as well.

Because he is so fearlessly honest himself, he places a lot of value in honesty and trusts the people around him to be as direct. One of the things that upsets him most is when his friends lie to him, and he often pushes his unwavering honesty onto them if it's any business of his at all. For example, in canon when his best friend Anwar suddenly chooses to honour his Islamic upbringing and condemn Maxxie's homosexuality, Maxxie refuses to even see him until Anwar can own up to it and accept him for who he is. And then, when Tony cheats on Michelle with him, Maxxie ends up standing up in front of his class and announcing his apology to everyone, mostly because he just couldn't take the guilt of it anymore. He views secrets as burdens more than anything else, and he doesn't understand why anyone would bear them willingly.

If a close friend wanted him to keep a secret, however, he would do his best to keep it, as long as it didn't hurt anyone. The people Maxxie loves are his first priority, and he'd drop everything for any of them. When it comes to everyone else, he understands the give and take of every day life - he doesn't try and create relationships with any of the young men he sleeps with, knowing full well that it's more of a mutual using than anything else, and that neither of the really care what the other thinks, as long as it's hot and they get what they want. This doesn't mean he doesn't want a relationship, however. He would like to have a boyfriend, he just hasn't found the right boy yet.

All of these things, along with a habit for biting his lip when he's upset, make up the 18-year-old, approximately five-foot-seven blond, Maxxie Oliver.

History:It's been a long time since humans were confined to living on Earth's surface. With the advances in space exploration, it's now at the point where living in space is the norm, and planets are used as hubs for business and pleasure. Ships that can navigate outer space have become as regular as cars, and with the infinite playground of nothingness, pretty much anything can happen, including a little bit of piracy here and there. Anyone can become a space pirate, including groups of kids who want to have a good time but can't exactly afford to do it as much as they'd like.

Maxxie is one of these kids.

His upbringing was fairly typical. His parents loved him and supported him with everything he wanted to do. This included dance when he wanted to start taking classes, and when he came out of the closet they did nothing but help him be as comfortable with himself as he could. There were a few years where his father pressured him into going to engineering (intergalactic engineering of course), but he eventually figured out that Maxxie was going to do what Maxxie was going to do, and no one would change his mind.

When Maxxie was about seventeen, he and his friends decided to pitch in on a ship - a party ship, to be specific. In between dancing and school work, Maxxie's favourite past-time was partying, and they all knew that a party wasn't a party unless it was in outer space. Out there they wouldn't have to worry about getting caught or wrecking anything - all they had to do was make sure everything was sealed tight and that they weren't in any high traffic areas and they could go for days.

Unfortunately, with the way they were burning through drugs, booze and toilet paper, they ran out of money fairly quickly. That's when the stealing started.

They started with small things. Bits of food here and there - maybe some supplies for the ship. However, it wasn't long before they were completely out of money, and they had to steal everything just to get by. This ticked off the wrong people, and suddenly they were outlaws, having to turn tail every time the law enforcement showed up. Too many close calls left them a little defensive as a group, and they started stocking up on minor weapons, things like handguns, just to stay safe. Despite all this, they managed to party just as hard, and maybe a little harder with the way they had to move around so often. They got more and more comfortable being on the run, and they learned to enjoy themselves. Eventually, they turned themselves into something akin to modern day band of Merry Men, stealing from the rich and sharing their wealth with every adolescent who wanted in on a good party. In this way they became a bit of a legend, and word of them being in town spread around like wildfire among the underground communities of each planet. Their infamy rose and by the time Maxxie was nineteen, he was almost a celebrity.

It was then that he was pulled into an alternate reality.

How does your AU differ from canon? Well, this is a Space Pirates AU, and Skins was about a group of kids in modern day Bristol. Clearly, there are a lot of differences in the technology and routines they are accustomed to, and their problems are a little more serious (such as "losing all the oxygen" or "the bounty hunters are after us again" compared to "oh no Tony's cheating on his girlfriend again.") However, everyone retains the same basic characterization and group dynamic they had in canon, with just a few tweaks to make it all a little more space pirate-y.
  • There are guns! Space guns. Maxxie doesn't particularly like shooting his, but he knows how.
  • They're a little more aware of their mortality. Being on the run can do that to you.
  • There's no gravity! Most of the time. They have to simulate gravity with acceleration and rotation and other things like that so that they don't lose bone mass.
  • Sometimes they run into races that aren't human!

Strengths:
  • Flexibility ;)
  • He's very compassionate and friendly!
  • He is very athletic and does have some experience in fight-like situations.

Weaknesses:
  • No superpowers 8(
  • Sometimes he gets upset about things and he has trouble thinking about anything else.
  • He doesn't like to hurt people. This can often be an obstacle when he is in danger or when his friends are in danger.

Preferred drop-in point: Truth or Consequences!

What are some of your plans for this character in their new environment?Shenanigans. Lots of them. I do hope to get him involved as involved as possible in lots of plot, but overall he is a very versatile character that can do well whether he's heavily involved or not.

First Person Journal Sample:[There's a bit of shuffling, and Maxxie looks as though he's had a bit of trouble getting the video going, but as he sees that it's recording he grins.]

Right. So despite the fact this phone is absolutely fucking ancient, I've got it figured out. Look at mine! [He holds up a puck-shaped thing that looks as though it could be some sort of communication device.] It's way easier, yeah? You just... [He messes around with it a bit, but it has no network to connect to, so it's completely useless.] Well, you can play games on it.

[He frowns at it a little, and then puts it away.] Anyway, it kinda looks like I'm stuck here, [And as much as he's trying not to be openly upset about it, you can tell he is.] so I guess I should find out more about... everything. Is there anywhere nicer? To stay, I mean. This place is kind of a fucking dump.

Third Person Sample:Naturally, Maxxie had more than a few questions on his mind when he woke up. Usually when he woke up in a strange place, he could remember what he did the night before to get him there, but this was different. This was downright freaky. He felt sick to his stomach, felt it twist in anxiety. Had he finally been caught? What did they do to criminals like them? It's not like they had killed anyone, they just stole some stuff - that didn't warrant any real punishment, did it?

In any case, he felt trapped. He had just woken up in an oversized test tube and he had no idea where his friends were.

He swore quietly.

As he wobbled out, Maxxie noted that he still had his gun, which was a nice relief. Even if he felt totally helpless otherwise, and even if he hated shooting the damn thing, not having his gun would have been the absolute last straw. It was safety, it was reassurance that he wasn't a sitting duck for bigger and badder pirates if they ever caught him unaware.

Looking around the room, he called out a few times. "Chris? Anwar? Cass - is anyone here?" With no answer, he felt the last few remaining ounces of hope that everything hadn't gone to complete shit drain out of him and he sat down on the floor, bringing his knees to his chest and trying to feel a little less defeated and alone. He was startled when a screen suddenly lit up across the room, and as the man on it began speaking, Maxxie stood up and got closer.

"Fucking hell," he said, trying to listen over his own panicked heartbeat. When the transmission ended, he couldn't help but shout. "No! Tell me where the fuck I am! What did you do with my friends..."

He knew it was useless. Recorded transmissions didn't talk back - he knew that - but he couldn't help but feel a little desperate given his circumstances. After he watched the blank screen for a few more seconds, he deflated a little and turned away, looking at the boxes of stuff. He'd be able to get more answers outside, wouldn't he? And if he was going to go outside, he might as well stock up in case he couldn't get back in. Rifling through the boxes, Maxxie once again felt his stomach twist as he wondered where his friends were. Until he found out more, all he could do was hope they were okay.
