- CHARACTER INFORMATION
NAME: Maxxie Oliver
CODENAME: --
SERIES/SOURCE: Skins
AGE: 18
GENDER: Male
ROLE: Student

BACKGROUND:
Born and raised in Bristol, England, Maxxie dreamed from an early age of making a name for himself. He was always very theatrical, and as the only child of Walter and Jackie Oliver, he generally got the attention he wanted.

Being a cute, freckled, blond boy, he was liked by everyone right from the beginning. Teachers often fawned over him, and he didn't have much trouble making friends. Despite his early interest in dance, he managed to keep a good group of male friends as well as female friends. He was outgoing, and his infectious smile charmed everyone.

At around thirteen, two changes occurred that left a big impact on Maxxie's life. First, his powers manifested, and while he couldn't confirm they existed for another couple years, this was when the signs began. Second, he began to realise he was gay. While he never viewed coming out as a huge hurdle in his life, it took him a while to fully understand it himself. When he was finally sure, he didn't hesitate in sitting down with his family and telling them. It was a little harder with his friends, but thankfully most of them accepted him, and anyone who didn't was told they were free to leave. Even after his coming out, he still grew up as one of the boys.

It wasn't until he was almost sixteen that Maxxie realised he was a mutant. Warning signs of his powers had been popping up for around two years, Maxxie had never really been in the right frame of mind to push them farther. It was during a fight with one of his friends, when he accidentally triggered a bigger reaction of his powers and nearly blinded everyone in the room. It didn't take long for him to figure out what had happened.

Coming out as a mutant was different than coming out of the closet, but Maxxie would say it was a lot harder. Mutants weren't the same phenomenon in England as they were in America, and he had never heard anything about them locally except on the news every once in a while. It wasn't like being gay; at least there he knew he'd have support from his friends, but being a mutant made him feel alone. For the second time, he sat his parents down and told them what he was, and after a long discussion they all agreed that for now keeping it quiet was the best thing to do, as long as Maxxie could keep his powers in check.

There were a few mishaps in the following years, but his powers weren't aggressive enough to do any serious damage. It tended to be a touchy subject with his closest friends even when they were only curious about how it worked. Over time, however, Maxxie began to get frustrated with having a gift and not being able to use it properly. He started practicing, but without any guidance he didn't know what to do. It was the end of his second-last year at college when he told his parents about Xavier's. They hesitated, trying to convince him to finish college before running off to America to become some kind of caped crusader, but he promised he just wanted to learn how to use his abilities properly. After a few long talks and a fair amount of begging, they decided to let him go.

PERSONALITY:
If there's one word to describe Maxxie, it's "charming." Maxxie's smile is the kind that brightens a room, and he knows how to use it. While he isn't terribly arrogant, he doesn't lack a lot of self-confidence; he's quite happy with how he looks, and he carries himself that way.

When you first meet him, Maxxie is an easy-going, social young man. He has absolutely no problem talking to new people and he makes friends easily. Meet him at a party, and if he hasn't been distracted by his "prospects," he's probably hanging out with his friends, making sure everyone else is having a good time too. If there's one thing that's most important to him, it's his friends and their happiness. He would never do anything to hurt his friends, and if he accidentally upset them, he'd feel guilty about it until it was resolved.

Maxxie places a lot of value in honesty. He much prefers being open about things instead of keeping them a secret, and tends to find a secret of any kind a burden. Even when people don't need to know something, he doesn't feel right about keeping it from them. He tends to push this trait onto other people when it regards him. If they can't own up to something he's involved in, he'll push them to own up to it themselves or else he'll do it for them.

He can also be a bit sensitive. When someone's angry at him, he worries over it and can't let it go. It's at that point he feels pressured to let everything out, and he usually lacks a good grasp of who it will embarrass or how much; he just does it. This doesn't necessarily mean he can't keep a secret. He still knows what should be said and what shouldn't, but if the secret's hurting one of his friends, he does what he thinks is right and uncovers it.

APPEARANCE:
Maxxie is very confident in his appearance, and it isn't misplaced. As a dancer, he's very fit, and while he isn't extremely built, one wouldn't say he's skinny either. Standing somewhere around 5'6"/168 cm, he's on the short side, but his body shape doesn't suggest it.

He has a strong facial structure and his blond hair is always straightened and styled perfectly to look like he never needed to do anything with it in the first place. His eyes are a light hazel and he has freckles across his nose and cheeks, but they're barely visible unless you see him up close.

Overall, he's a rather attractive young man, if short, blond boys from the west country are your thing.

POWERS:
Maxxie's powers are inspired by Dazzler's powers, so I'll be using the info in that section of her entry to help me outline and explain them.

The basic physics of Maxxie's power is that he can control the outer electron shells of the atoms around him. The result of the changing levels in a group of atoms is the release of a photon, or a packet of light. Maxxie doesn't necessarily need to know how it happens, but on an atomic level those are the basics. All Maxxie has to do is dictate the colour and brightness of the light, and the physics will follow.

Because he hasn't had any formal training, Maxxie can't do a lot with his power, and he especially can't do anything of a combative nature. His current range of abilities consists of:
  • Intensifying or dulling existing light.
  • Changing the colour of existing light.
  • Creating a new, weak light source.
These really only scratch the surface of what he can do. With practice, he'll have complete control of the entire visible spectrum of light. This means he'll be able concentrate light into a laser, create a bright enough flash of light to temporarily blind anyone, and with a lot of practice and training, create a believable hologram.

Along with his abilities come the natural perks of being immune to them. Ever since his power manifested he can naturally dim bright lights so they won't hurt his eyes, and conversely he can brighten a room or an object if it's too dark to see. The use of his powers to this degree is generally a subconscious one, and the change only occurs close to him. Anything requiring more power would also require conscious thought.

ANYTHING ELSE?:
He is a fairly competent dancer, and he can use a skateboard to get from point A to point B, but nothing more than that.

- RP SAMPLES
First-person sample:
[The video turns on and Maxxie's sitting at his desk, his elbows resting in front of him and a smile on his face.]

So... about this whole homework thing.

I was thinking, since it's not due for another, oh, sixty hours or so, that we go out and get completely smashed tonight and then do it all at the last minute. Now, some of you may think that's a bad idea, but I think that way we can maximise the amount of fun we have and still get all our work done. And I know some of you must be waiting for something fun to come along, so this is your chance.

Who's with me?

Third-person sample:
The music's loud, the lights are bright, everyone's moving and Maxxie's in his element. He loves this; he loves having to lean in or yell to be heard because the music's at its highest volume and people are screaming all arond him. This is what real fun is: absolutely no inhibitions and following every instinct you have to just move. It's amazing. It's especially amazing when Maxxie's found someone as cute as this guy is, and they're talking it up in the corner of the room, laughing drunkenly and being not-so-subtle as they check each other out. This is thrilling. Maxxie's been perfecting this art for years, and he knows by now he's got it down to a science. Reel him in, talk him up and smile, and then lean in at that perfect moment. Maxxie knows when that perfect moment is; he's a natural.

But he doesn't expect moments like this. Someone's got their hand on his shoulder, tugging at it to turn him around and look at them. "I'm a little busy," he says, but then he sees the look on his friend's face.

"Max, you're the first one I could find. Come on, you've got to come help."

Maxxie sighs, gives his new friend an apologetic smile and follows his old friend to the bathroom. Inside, there's a girl sitting on the floor with her head bowed over the toilet, her cheeks covered in tears.

"What am I supposed to do?" Maxxie asks, panicking as he turns to his friend "I don't know how to deal with--"

"Just keep an eye on her until I find someone, alright?"

Maxxie sighs in defeat (again) and sits down on the edge of the bathtub, giving the girl and awkward pat on the back and asking if everything's alright.

"God, I just... can't believe him... he's so horrible..." she sobs, slumping against the toilet a little more. Maxxie winces and pulls her hair out of her face to keep it from getting in what was previously the contents of her stomach.

"Look, just, uh..." he really doesn't know how to deal with girls when they get like this, and he's glad he's never going to have to know. "Don't fall asleep, alright? Someone's coming to help. Can you keep your eyes open?"

She sobs a little more, "no, it's too bright."

Maxxie looks up at the door, which has been closed for her privacy, lets out a slow breath and dims the light in the room. The girl blinks her eyes open.

"How did you do that...?"

"There's a dimmer on the light switch," he lies. If there's one thing he knows about drunk, upset girls, it's that they'll believe almost everything. And she believes this, returning to her sobbing as Maxxie keeps rubbing her back, anxiously awaiting more help. When his friend returns, he squints into the room with the door open just enough for his head to get through.

"What the f-- Max."

Maxxie holds back any curses he has directed at his friend for making him do this, instead giving an exasperated look and letting the light go back to its original brightness. His friend shuffles in another girl, who immediately rushes to her friend's side and starts cooing at her as the sobbing resumes louder than before. Maxxie's friend thanks him quietly and they both leave the bathroom.

"Girls," Maxxie says, earning a look, but Maxxie's already gone, off looking for his new friend and rejoining the party. It's all just part of the fun.
