I got some bad, very unexpected news my last day in Oberlin. I was talking to the dean about returning next semester, and about winter term specifically, and he said "So you're probably going to do an off-campus individual project, right ( Read more... )

I definitely see your point. Thanks for the anecdote; it sounds like we deal with a lot of the same shit, and I can totally see how I could fall into bad habits and thought patterns in that situation.

Yeah. I've been there too. Not the same, but similar enough.

If you really want me to, I can send you my entire fucked-up history. It's not pleasant, though. Also, I don't want to post it all over teh intarwebs, so I'd be e-mailing it to you.

a) i agree with the above person. for serious. i know you want to be here, but oberlin during winter term can be depressing as all HELL.
b) if you want in on the israel trip, there is a teeny tiny eency weency chance you could go if you emailed the prof. right NOW and begged. i'm going, joe brophy is going, it's going to be awesome, but the deadline for handing in money (which is now $1500) was today, and you have to also have a valid passport and get them a photocopy of it. also i don't have much knowledge of environmental science either and i got in.
what could you lose by emailing?
c) it was so nice to see you here :) hopefully i shall see you next semester, which is not as far away as it seems, i promise.

I had no idea you were going to Israel! I talked to David Fisher about it and e-mailed the lady in charge last night; sadly, I haven't heard back from her yet. Also, my passport's expired. But hey, worth a shot!

APPEAL THAT SHIT. At least try. It'll show your maturity, confidence, and genuine yearn to come back and learn some more (and give them money). It could reflect very well on you.

That being said--you don't have classes in January? I go back pretty much the first Monday after New Year's!

Oberlin's thing is that instead of having classes in January, we have something called "winter term" in which we're free to pursue a project or internship -- something we're passionate about. Last year I interned with a counseling center. It's pretty cool, but it does mean we get out of school CRAZY late in May.

I'm going to play devil's advocate to some of the other comments here and point out that Winter Term at Oberlin can be one of the happiest, most relaxing months imaginable. Plan well, cook with friends, have a good project, and what do you have? A month in a beautiful, magical place, with all the advantages of fun times and good friends and minus the disadvantages of intense classes and stress. I'd see it as the ideal way to ease yourself back into Oberlin, since it would be getting you used to life away from home again without slamming you with stress as soon as you get there. I couldn't imagine any better way to ease back into Oberlin life, and if I were you I'd fight for that shit tooth and nail.

But that's just my perspective.

I think usually Oberlin offers WT internships with The Theater Offensive, an LGBTQ theater company in Boston. You could probably crash at my house if you wanted to do that.
