I think I might be a scanner, but I'm now 53. When I hit my early 40's I had this sort of throw my hands up soul searching too. I want to mention that I did go through an epiphany and it had to do with proficiency. I had that talk - what do I want to do when I grow up? Everything was the answer, but another part of me wanted to leave some sort of intellectual legacy as I don't have children. Because I had scanned so many things I finally was able to settle on about 10 things that I decided to bring to penultimate proficiency. Some folks take a lifetime to do one thing, but that's not me. But having multiple interest streams allows me to mix it up when I get bored bored bored. (25 years to a Laurel has to be some kinda record

*rofl* I'm sort of wondering which of our Speshul Snowflakes you met!
I tend to - overly emotionally invest. For the moment, I need to walk away. That doesn't mean that I'm not likely to come back around to the Dutch costume. Because I probably will. And I MIGHT even take that further - expanding the offerings on my website through the centuries and see if I can trace the development of what is considered "Regional Costume" today from it's origins in dress in the 16th century. Never fear. I even have a vintage 1920's magazine with an article on Dutch Knitting. I haven't given it up. I just need to step back for a while because of it's associations with things that annoy me.
Part of it is that it's not JUST about what I want. My involvement with Irish Dance, for instance, rides largely on my childrens' ability and desire to participate and grow. And I need to spend time with my kids, too!
Fast forward to the next post and see if you have more to say that might be helpful? (As this certainly was!!)
My profession is reasonably decent for a scanner... I know the basic outline of the day, but specifics vary. :-) And there is the opportunity for learning new things. Our new blood machines are being installed tomorrow, for instance.
But, yeah, I need something. (Well, I need for John to get a job so I can be at work less and have more TIME to pursue Other Stuff(TM).)

My problem is that I need a new way to refocus that energy.
