sitting on the couch watching "Jodhha Akbar." Again. OK, it plays merry cob with actual history, but it's a good movie and Hrithik Roshan is always worth watching ( Read more... )

Unfortunately that way of thinking wont change until it starts from the top. Or in A&S. You will find a lot of the same type of philosophy in the rapier community. There is a part of me that wants to see someone win crown with a historical method for beating the crap out of you. Then you will find a shift in thinking. Maybe.

Not in the Mid any time soon, that's for certain sure.

YOU Might have enjoyed the whole Muhgal/Rajput empire. John actually checked on Elephant rentals in PA for Great Court.

Even if I had dressed you in a sari and dupatta? ;-)

(Found some gorgeous ones on E-bay. Makes me wish I still had somewhere to wear one)

Last summer I got to teach at a fighting event about landsknecht clothes. I started with interviewing fighters - the King on down. It was evidently clear that this was a modern sport to the participants, including wanting to take advantage of light weight armour components to increase their movement and make them more competitive. It was the unhidden status quo, and period presentation more involved covering up the modern rather than making total period gear. Some fighters do it, but they don't win, although they win the grudging respect of the other fighters. But it really is a kind of separate game from the Laurel's or Pelican participation. It took me 29 years to figure out the fighters. I had never thought to ask (or really care, I guess having no fighter). Sheesh.

I'd be more OK with that, if they didn't insist (especially at demos) that they're doing period fighting. They aren't. They don't WANT to. And they really don't want anybody pointing out to them that they COULD.

Most of them have built their reputations on the "sport" form and don't want to see it change. Why? A significant alteration in rules and style is likely to put somebody ELSE on top. Horrors!! OMGWTFBBQ!! Zombies!!!

I submit that there is some potential for better Kings, however. ;-) Imagine if you had to actually have some working knowledge of history to be able to engage in discussion and practice of fighting!

*lol* Indeedy.

I DO have a fighter-type at home. And his interest in HEMA over SCA sport fighting is another big reason we opted to step out.
