bet your ass he better pay you! but seriously, if he didn't bother reporting it stolen then obviously he doesn't care enough and hopefully he has the mind to know that his pet has found a much better home.
*shakes head* it's like a kid who ignores a toy until you start playing with it and suddenly they remember that it's theirs and they want it back.
remember that pets who are trained and looked after like that will likely be microchipped or marked or SOMETHING. I would definitely talk to an SPCA rep and see what they figure - it could just be some weirdo.
There SHOULD be some records - I would also say you should ask him to provide some medical records of the ferret and the vet he went to and ask the VET if this is the same guy.
