My PhD proposal got lost in the Christmas post. I found this out when I went to Central Saint Martins' Research Office to ask them aboout the progress of my application. My saddened and confused face lasted one milisecond, the time it took me to remember I had an electronic copy of everything in my flash drive. Then it was them who look baffled. In ( Read more... )

In big words, you could describe it as an investigation into the psycho-social objectivity of objects of seduction in Fine Art.

In little ones, what I want to find out is why everyone likes iPods and if the same design principles can be applied to sculpture.

It's curves. VW Beetles, St Paul's, London taxis, iMacs. Every time, we "don't know why we like them so much" but we "just do". And every time it's curves.

Whether this steadfast rule is breast-related, as I have heard mooted, I honestly haven't a clue, but it might prove a useful starting-point.

I think you are very right there. Curves are it. But certainly there's more to it. What are the different intensities of liking? Can something one doesn't like be irresistible? What makes something seduce us?

I have no idea what the answer to any of these things may be. Yet. I hope to know in 5/7 years time. And if I do and can explain it, you will all have to call me doctor. I think I will have earned it.

Wonderful to see you here, BTW. Great great icon.

Back to the Barre
In the mid 1980s, the acclaimed writer Laura Thompson dreamed of becoming a prima ballerina - but a growth spurt left her too big for her tu-tu, and she said goodbye to the ballet.

In 2004, when Laura started writing a book about the subject, she decided to join an amateur ballet company. Cameras follow Laura as she prepares to make her first public performance in more than 20 years.

Oh my god! That will be the story of my life, no less because I am Laura too! Or at least I hope so...
