I never thought that writing 500 words could be so excruciating. My 500 words are not any common 500 words, though. These 500 words are tied to a £7500 award to pay for my PhD course. That makes each word worth £15, which for interdisciplinarity is a bargain, but for I is a little bit pricey ( Read more... )

Ugh, ugh. I love writing, but I hate those situations where you have to obsess over every word. See also: writing cover letters to agents.

I have certainly become very ontological about every single word. What does it mean? Is it precise enough? What does it reveal about me? I would be happier if the product of such careful considerations was minimally readable. As it stands it is just fragmented rubbish...

Those arts and humanities research bastards. i know the feeling, except for me it was an MA rather than a phD.

Yes, they tend to make life difficult whether on the institution side, or the student side. I do both... And, although I should know the score, it's not simple. When I asked for my £15,000 grant from the Basque Government to do my MA, I only had to given them a prospectus from the college and my birth certificate... Oh, and write it in Basque. It worked.
