Katniss sat at the base of an elm tree, trying to catch her breath, her hair plastered to her sweaty brow.
She could practically feel her heart beating against her ribcage, like a bird flapping its wings. Her body still tingling from the rush of adrenaline, but she couldn't move any farther, her feet suddenly heavy as bricks. Every little move made her spine ache.
She knew she couldn't stay here forever. But, she had to bet that most of the others were doing the same thing right now: resting, plotting the next move before night fell.
There were important things she should've been thinking about at this moment, but all she could think about was the girl she'd collided with a little while ago (how long ago had than been? five minutes? ten?). The encounter had been so brief she really had to concentrate, her mind like a film she was rewinding, focusing on the little details she'd missed. The freckles on her cheeks, her red hair tied back, her eyes wide with fear, just as scared as Katniss was.
Then in a flash, it was over, the girl was darting soundlessly across the opening and into the thicket of trees, to find the safety of the shadows until it was dark.
Katniss decided that she would nickname her Foxface. She wondered what her real name is. Ivy? Astonia? Caldesia? It could be one of those, or none.
She inhales deeply, watches as the shadows around her grew longer.
