Rue was dead. Peeta was dead now, too.
So now, Katniss found herself with Foxface. She wasn't with her because she liked her, but because their alliance benefitted one another. There was no true desire to protect her, but because she was the next best choice. And they needed each other with people like Cato and Clove roaming around.
Foxface was watchful, quiet like the wind, could figure the others' little secrets, not to mention stealing. And Katniss, she was good with her bow and arrow to pick off animals and their enemies. They were useful for each other, for now.
She knew that the whole thing was short-term. Their days together would be short. It wouldn't last.
Katniss would fend someone off of her if needed, but she secretly hoped that Foxface would get killed first.
That way she wouldn't have to kill her herself.
