Marian knew what it was like to have a small, quiet breakdown. When the mistakes at work were brought home, to hide her face in a towel, to choke the sobs back, and let the tears flow soundlessly.
But, Marian had never witnessed another woman crying before (not since childhood, anyway), and she had uttered no sound of surprise to see Rachel sitting on her red velvet couch, her body hunched forward,
shaking, her cries barely audible.
Despite Rachel's cold exterior, Marian had always felt sympathy for her, as she saw still as a mere child, lost and confused, knowing that her parents had not been real, but not certain if they had ever really died or not.
Her sorrow had been built up for years, anyone of her status could see that, it was not hard to figure out.
Seeing her finally cry it out, was like watching and waiting for the crack in the dam to burst and let all the water out.
Wine was known to make people maudlin. But, as Marian noticed, it was unopened.
