Braeden doesn’t disclose her history with Kate. It’s not worthy of discussion; she’s a professional and she’ll do the job she was hired for.
Even when she finds herself growing closer to Derek, she still doesn’t tell him she used to run with the woman he’s paying Braeden to find.
That was a dark time in her life, and Kate made it so much darker. Back when US Marshal was still a job and not just a cover, when she was spiralling, caught up in the case of the Desert Wolf, overwhelmed by it.
Kate was there for her, always with some shiny new titbit, some new nugget of supernatural information for Braeden to obsess over. In hindsight, she can see how Kate always made herself seem like the useful one, even though it was Braeden’s connections that were the real asset.
They hunted together. Braeden’s not ashamed of that, it made her stronger. Kate was wild, Braeden level-headed, and together they were unstoppable. Tracking and killing rabid monsters that threatened innocents. Bouncing from town to town, because Kate always had some lead on the Desert Wolf, and it took Braeden too long to realise they never came to anything.
She still has fond memories, despite all the lies. Seedy motel rooms, pinning Kate against the mattress, fucking her hard with Kate’s teeth in her neck, her nails in Braeden’s back.
But she won’t feel any regret when she hands Kate over.
Because it’s Kate who’s the rabid monster now.
