Summary: Rachel had believed there was no such thing as destiny...
Rachel had believed there was no such thing as destiny. That there was no outside force that had anything to do with anyone's favorable outcome. That destiny was people who had exhausted every reason through faults of their own. Or someone else.
Was it destiny that Rachel was a clone? No. It was scientists. And the government who initiated it.
And who was the boss now. The one higher than Leekie and Rachel herself? That Marian woman. Leekie had been the cover for her. Was he dead now? Probably. But, it didn't matter. He was no longer of any use.
According to Marian, that is. Of course, Marian would never say such a thing bluntly. It was subtle. She informed in a polite manner that he screwed up. Someone had to take the blame.
Marian more to with the events in the last two years than anyone else. Oh, yes. She knew the real reason behind Beth's (untimely?) death by a train.
She did had not known Beth personally. But, Marian had counted on her death. At least that's what the markers for inflammation in her blood said. Not, outright, no. It just told she was under severe stress. It was flight or fight.
But, there was no point in fighting those who remained perched on top in the shadows.
Rachel was not cautious about Marian. Or scared.
She knew what this woman was made. (She knew of that child).
She wondered if the woman had been barren. Sentimental, perhaps.
