Ruby sat on the other side of the table. Belle knew there was something wrong. She'd known something was wrong for a while. Since the curse broke it had been like there was some barrier between them.
Belle felt dread because she knew Ruby was going to tell her what was wrong, and that it was going to break her heart. She didn't ask. She let Ruby say it in her own time.
"I can't do this anymore."
Belle closed her eyes for a few seconds, trying to keep from sobbing. She loved Ruby. Completely. She opened her eyes. "Why, what did I do?"
"Oh Belle, you did nothing, believe me. It's just...since the curse broke..." Ruby frowned, trying to find the right words. There were no right words, only honest ones. "Red's straight."
Belle blinked. That wasn't something that had ever crossed her mind.
"Ruby is definitely bisexual. But Red," she rubbed her hands together in front of her. "Red isn't attracted to you. Red is one hundred percent into men and trying to figure it out is tearing me apart. I can't be with you. I can't do that do you when I'm so messed up."
Belle could see Ruby/Red was struggling to hold it together. She was going to speak but Ruby stood, apologised, and ran out. Belle was left at the table alone and devastated. At the same time she realised the horror her girlfriend had been going through.
She cried for them both.
