She was late.
But she fought away.
Faith drove the stake into the heart of the snarling vampire and whipped her right leg to kick away the next one. She pulled another stake from the small of her back. She wiped the blood from her brow that kept getting in her eye. Her lip was split, the right side of her face bruised.
Punch, punch, stab. Wood punctured heart and the vamp burst into dust.
Faith kept fighting. She was thinking about Buffy. She was thinking about the hell Buffy had gone into, and how she had been sure Faith would be there to back her up.
Faith wasn't there.
She was late. She hadn't fought fast enough and Buffy had gone in alone.
Savage violence. Ash and death.
It took another fifteen minutes. Faith lost count of how many of the bastards she took out.
She stumbled, aching and hurt, down into the Shadow Queen's tomb. She felt dread and anger at herself. She'd let Buffy down. She'd left her to face the monster alone.
As she went deeper she passed vampire dust and demon corpses. Buffy's own trail of slaying.
In the final chamber Faith found her.
She looked like hell, battered and bleeding.
The Shadow Queen was worse, a puddle of black ick.
"Sorry I'm late," Faith said.
"Sorry I didn't wait," Buffy said.
For a while they just held each other. Relieved.
"Next time we stay together," Faith kissed Buffy's lips, despite the blood and pain.
