“Let me get this straight - you want me to brief the press because the president’s going shopping?”

Mandy shook her head, “I’m just giving you the heads up.”

“Like I’m giving the press the heads up?”

“Right.”

“About the president going shopping?”

“For Zoey’s birthday.”

“Right.” CJ narrowed her eyes, “you do realize my responsibilities here include more than those of a trained monkey?”

“I do.”

“Just so we’re clear.”

Mandy sighed, “CJ-”

“You can’t just bring a news crew with you?”

“We are, you’ll simply make a few additional comments during your briefing. I missed his shopping trip at Christmas, so-”

“God forbid.”

“CJ.”

“I’m on it, I’m on it.”

“It’ll be great footage, CJ.”

“I know it’ll be great footage.”

“You look like you’re pissed at me.”

CJ Sighed, “You have a sharp tone.”

“What? I don’t have a sharp tone.”

“I’m hung over, Mandy.”

“Oh.”

“And you have a sharp tone.”

Mandy narrowed her eyes, “People often comment on the smoothness of my voice.”

“And I’m telling you there’s a sharp tone, alright?”

“You’re hung over?”

“I’m hung over. Anything else you’d like? Fries? A coke?”

“I’m good.”

“I’m not a trained monkey, Mandy.”

“We’ve been over that.”

“Just thought I’d reiterate.” CJ rubbed her eyes tiredly. “I don’t look hung over, I hope.”

“Wouldn’t have guessed.”

“Good.”

Mandy paused at the door. “Just out of interest, how did you wind up-”

CJ shot her a glare, “Are you implying I’m not capable of a social life?”

A half hour later, after CJ had gained access to a decent cup of coffee, Mandy stopped by her office again.

“Look, I wasn’t implying anything before.”

CJ looked up, “Before?”

“Regarding your social life.”

“Ah,” CJ nodded, “Mandy, I really hope this is going somewhere useful. You have no idea how enormous my headache is.”

“You have my deep sympathies.”

CJ smirked, “Cute. My point is I highly doubt you came here for just an apology.”

Mandy tilted her head. “I didn’t apologize.”

“Great. Thanks for that.”

Mandy shrugged. “But now that we’re on the subject…”

“Look, I was at home. Happy? I was drinking at home.”

There was an awkward pause. CJ sighed, “And before you make any comments about how sad that is-”

“CJ, look,” Mandy stopped her. “Next time you feel like drinking, how about I ask you out?”

“What?”

Another awkward pause.

“CJ?”

“I’m hung over, Mandy.”

“As you keep reminding me.”

CJ let out an awkward laugh, “I’m simply putting my current state out there again, just in case I was imagining-”

“I asked you out.”

CJ sighed, then squinted like she found the matter hard to digest.

“Ok…”

Mandy shook her head. “Was I speaking too sharply or too softly this time?”

“Sharp. You were being sharp,” CJ said. She narrowed her eyes like she was considering the thought. “You asked me out?”

“Too softly?”

“I’m not hard of hearing, Mandy.”

Mandy smiled dryly, “I promise to leave my sharp tones at home.”
