April decided, long ago, that when it came down to life or the drugs, she'd rather have the drugs. Maureen knew that even before she moved into the Loft, listening to Collins worry about her over the phone.
Maureen didn't know, when she moved in, that April would be vibrant, unstoppable, wild, and beautiful. No one mentioned that.
She didn't know that April would want her, either, and she couldn't say no to April. Not that first time, when April shoved her down onto the bed and climbed on top of her before Maureen could say a word; not the second, the thirteenth, or the fourtieth, either.
But eventually, Maureen had her own choice to make, and it wasn't about the drugs, either -- she never let herself get into that. It was April and fear and worry and being far too careful, or it was Mark and safety and life.
She chose the simple life.
But the minute she saw April in that bathtub, she wished she hadn't, because without April, she wasn't really alive anyway.
