“Surprise,” said Elphaba, and then nearly blushed, if darker green constituted a blush - “I mean, surprise, not beauty. It’s just surprise. ‘Well, what do you know.’ It’s not beauty.”

Stop! Mortification tinted Elphaba’s cheeks further as she stammered and rushed her words. Nothing had ever made her do such a thing before, and she didn’t like the feeling.

Yet she couldn’t bring herself to hate it, either.

Later that night, Elphaba called out softly in the darkness. “Miss Galinda?”

Galinda mumbled in reply.

“Did you mean what you said earlier?” Elphaba asked haltingly, her heart racing.

Galinda mumbled again. “What did I say earlier?”

That I was pretty.

Fortunately, fate decided to extend her a little kindness; Elphaba cringed at how pathetic the words sounded, revising her decision to speak them aloud.

“Oh, nothing.”

Galinda made it a trio of mumblings.

“Well, whatever it was, of course I did. I don’t care to waste words on false sentiment unless the company expressly requires it.”

“And my company doesn’t?”

“Of course not,” Galinda grunted. Elphaba smiled to herself. She wasn’t sure whether to take that as a compliment or not, but one a day was enough in any case.
