It wasn’t often that Galinda awoke first. Usually, Elphaba would be up and dressed, and invariably cramming in some extra reading, by the time Galinda’s eyes deigned to open for the day.
Which just plain wasn’t fair, because Galinda liked watching Elphaba sleep.
Not in any romantic way, of course - it was just that, in general, from a completely impersonal and detached viewpoint, there was something calming about Elphaba actually being still for once. Awake, she seemed constantly on the move: writing, pacing, twitching, eyes darting, fingers twisting; it was exhausting just to watch. It was almost a relief to see her sleep, if only to know for certain that she actually did.
Besides, folded up spikily in her too-large nightgown, there was something endearing about her. She looked innocent. Sweet, even.
Or not, Galinda hurriedly caught herself. ‘Human’, rather. Marginally less weird.
And a little...softer. Gone was the hawkish bookworm, whose eyes glared and peered from behind ugly wire-rimmed spectacles. In her place, just a sleeping girl, with eyelashes that nobody else knew were unfairly long.
But she never stayed that way for long, no matter how early Galinda rose. All too soon, Elphaba would stir, and immediately reach for her glasses. Instantly, her nose would sharpen, her lips would narrow, and her brow would crease as the weight of the world settled once more upon her bony shoulders.
And “Good morning, Miss Elphaba,” Galinda would greet her; never able to hide the disappointment in her voice.
