Inara learned young that if she came home dirty, no one would say anything. But there'd be looks -- her mother's dissaproving glance, her father's quiet frown, her little sister's astonished stare, her older brother's headshake against her youth. So Inara stopped getting dirty.
Until she met Kaylee.
When she first saw the mechanic, she was amazed, not just by the streaks of dirt all the way up her arms and all over her face, but by how the girl looked more beautiful with the dirt than without it. It amazed her -- she'd come from a world where dirt tarnished, dirt was disgusting.
She wanted to kiss Kaylee and see if she tasted like dirt, too.
Instead, she shook her hand and was strangely satisfied when the dirt clouded her own perfect skin.
