Nanny sees them first; lazily lounging in the shade of the fig tree, neither showing any signs that they have heard the bell. She is about to hustle Nessarose over to remind the girls to hurry along when Glinda cups Elphaba’s face in her hands, and kisses her mouth lightly - the affectionate gesture one that has evidently been practiced and perfected over time.
“Nanny, isn’t that a sin?” hisses Nessarose. Nanny grits her teeth - clearly it is. Nessarose’s question is merely a bitchy rhetoric.
But Elphaba looks happy, and Elphaba never looks happy. Smug, sometimes, but never so blissfully content. Sighing, Nanny steers Nessarose away from the tender display.
“Only if your father finds out.”
