This close, Jane has to tilt her head back to see Sif’s face. There’s dirt smeared across Sif’s cheek, a graze above her right eyebrow. Perspiration shines on her forehead, and she looks at Jane with an intensity that makes her shiver.
“Are you unharmed?” Sif asks quietly, voice thick with emotion. Her eyes slowly rake across Jane’s face, gaze getting caught upon Jane’s mouth, and it takes a long moment for Jane to find her words, to remember she’s expected to answer.
“I’m fine,” she promises, sounding shakier than she means to.
Sif nods distractedly. Her hand raises, thumb brushing the corner of Jane’s mouth. There’s a hint of blood there, from being in the wrong place at the wrong time during the battle, and Sif rubs at it slowly.
Jane turns into the touch, fights the urge to purse her lips and kiss the pad of Sif’s thumb. Sif’s eyes remain on her mouth, and her own lips are parted, flushed and so inviting.
And then Sif is meeting Jane’s gaze, and everything melts away, air wavering with heat between them, and Jane forgets how to breathe.
Until Sif takes a single, purposeful step back.
“I swore that I would keep you safe,” she says, and Jane can recognise the longing in her voice, because she feels it too. But neither of them is ready to speak of it, and so Sif walks away, leaving Jane with only the taste of blood and Sif’s skin upon her lips.
