Jemma’s well aware of May’s reputation. Granted, she doesn’t know the finer details of exactly what May did to gain that reputation. There are so many conflicting stories about The Cavalry, after all. But all those stories paint a picture of somebody who's cold and hard and ruthless.
At times like this, that reputation seems rather hard to believe.
May has extra pillows in her bunk. Jemma doesn’t know where they came from, because she’s raided the storage closets herself and hasn’t found so much as a single spare blanket. Truth be told, she has a sneaking suspicion that May bought the pillows with her when she joined the team, and isn’t that a wonderful image, the ‘terrifying’ Melinda May queuing in a shop to purchase a set of the fluffiest pillows Jemma’s ever had the pleasure of lying on.
So May has her own extra pillows, and right now she’s reclining against them, hair fanning out, her face soft and relaxed. The Cavalry, the stuff of legends, but Jemma knows the truth.
May likes to be in comfort when she can, and May also likes to cuddle.
And, well, that’s just fine, because Jemma likes it too. Curling up against May’s side, feeling May’s fingers stroke through her hair, their skin sleepy-warm, her head on May’s shoulder.
Jemma won’t tell anyone May’s secret. She wouldn’t dare spoil May’s well-earned reputation, and besides, she likes having that knowledge to herself.
