Ariel spends her days in the shop, keeping Belle company and poking through the shelves. Exploring the artefacts of the human world, asking Belle questions and looked awed by the answers.
She recognises the jewellery, necklaces and rings and bracelets. Apparently it’s not uncommon for treasure chests to survive shipwrecks, even if the pirates who gathered the treasure do not. The chests sink to the ocean floor, waiting for Ariel to discover them.
Belle shows Ariel how they’re worn, taking the necklace Ariel places in her hair like a crown with a gentle smile, fastening it properly so emeralds and sapphires and gold shimmer against her throat.
Ariel beams at her, fingers stroking over the stones. “It suits you,” Belle tells her, and she insists Ariel wear it for the rest of the day, stealing surreptitious glances, admiring the way Ariel’s eyes shine as brightly as the jewels.
The next day Ariel gives her a look that’s uncharacteristically shy, and presses a gift into Belle’s hands. It’s a necklace, handmade, glistening shells woven together with thin frayed rope and twine. It smells like a ocean, like Ariel’s skin, and Belle holds it reverentially as she lifts it to her neck.
“No, try it this way,” Ariel grins, and she lays it over Belle’s head like a tiara. “It looks better like this.”
Belle laughs and gazes at her reflection, watching the way the light catches across the shells. “You’re right, it does,” she agrees, squeezing Ariel’s hand in her own.
