Maya should be used to this. Should be used to the way her skin crawls, the way she starts sweating beneath her clothes. All these anonymous faces, contacts of AIM, wanting to see her research, and she should be proud, she should be damn grateful that she’s finally getting the funding she needs.
But she sees it in their eyes, sees the glee and the destruction. Extremis was designed to help, to cure, but all they care about is using it to hurt, to raze, and Maya’s mouth tastes metallic from biting her tongue.
She should be used to that swell of frustration, but she isn’t. And besides, she’s pretty sure there’s nothing that could prepare her for Raina.
Raina with her huge eyes that hide whole galaxies, and her soft lips, her soft voice, her soft curves. She asks Maya questions that nobody else thinks to ask, and the scientist in Maya is delighted but the animal in her backs up, wary and cornered.
Raina watches the video feeds, the demonstrations, and Maya watches her, breathless, fingernails digging into her palms. “What will they become?” Raina murmurs, studying the test subjects, head tilted and her expression faraway, as if she already knows there’s no true answer.
But when Raina’s fingers brush Maya’s wrist, light as a feather yet somehow still deadly, she can’t bring herself to pull away.
“You intrigue me,” Raina tells her, mouth curved in a gentle but knowing smile.
God help her, Raina intrigues her too.
