When Mary’s hands settle upon her waist, Winifred cannot help her shiver. There’s something about Mary’s touch that makes her feel younger, that takes her back to the days of youth and discovery, before responsibilities, before the world’s injustices started to weigh her down. Ignorance may not have been bliss, but she felt lighter back then, like she was full of soap bubbles instead of sawdust.
She’s proud of the woman she has become, but there are days when the struggle seems so long and hard that her shoes feel like cement.
But Mary’s lips against her own send lightning down her spine, make her feel like she could rise into the air and float away, like there’s nothing she can’t fight. Everything is new again, living all her memories for the first time, happy and free.
“You are like magic,” she sighs against Mary’s mouth.
She feels the curve of Mary’s smile. “Don’t be ridiculous,” she murmurs, thumbs rubbing over Winifred’s hips. “There’s no such thing.”
And when Winifred laughs, it’s the giggle of a schoolgirl, light and sweet. Pressing closer, the scent of lavender and sugar filling her senses, letting Mary’s kisses bolster her for the day ahead.
