The warmth of Mulan’s skin has faded to something more comfortable, the dangerous heat of her fever finally broken. Her leg aches faintly, but it’s well wrapped with thick wide leaves, splinted with strips of solid bark. She moves it experimentally, just ever so slightly, and while there’s a stab of discomfort, it’s nothing like the pain she’s expecting from such a wound.
“You’re supposed to be keeping still,” Pocahontas reminds her with fond exasperation, kneeling beside Mulan’s makeshift bed and handing her a bowl of refreshingly cool water.
Mulan drinks deeply, eyes averted to be caught being such a troublesome patient. “You’re a miracle worker,” she says as she returns the bowl. There are bruises up her arms, but the colour of them has already settled to a weak yellow, the salve Pocahontas had spread over them easing the worse of the swelling.
“I merely know the plants of the forest and their uses well,” Pocahontas assures her. She settles down, sitting cross-legged, hand reaching forward to press against Mulan’s wrist. “It’s the least I could do. You were injured to keep me safe. You protected me.”
Mulan turns her hand over, grasps Pocahontas’ fingers tightly within her own. “Always,” she says, hoping Pocahontas understands the passion in her eyes, the desire to do whatever it takes to keep Pocahontas free from harm.
Judging by the way Pocahontas smiles, leaning close to brush their lips together with a gentleness that makes Mulan’s eyelashes flutter, Pocahontas understands all too well.
