The orchids have bloomed early this year, filling the palace garden with their pungent aroma.
The nearly symmetrical star-shaped petals are immaculate (or so she imagines). Jasmine had missed the sight of them during the winter. Sentient of their surroundings, they slowly unfold, their odor becoming ripe. One of the few things she didn't hate about living behind these walls.
Ariel, on the other hand, had never before seen such flowers. The ones underwater, were more flimsy, and they were always tainted with the salty smell of the water, dampening their true fragrance.
They were all different colors, from white to dark purple, from pink to blue. Like a rainbow she'd seen many times reflecting on the surface of the water.
She breathed in, taking in their scent, letting it fill her lungs.
