New York City. An empire built on crime. It’s the ultimate challenge for this team of gorgeous con artists. Can they pull it off?
Starring Lena Headey as master con artist Grace King and Mary McDonnell as the Mob Queen Marie Lena McDoogan, Nemesis delves into the world of organized crime and confidence tricks. When one of Grace’s team is taken out by the mob's best hit-woman (Stana Katic) in a case of mistaken identity, the team decides to take revenge the only way they know how: by conning the mob out of a fortune.
But asking for things to go smoothly is asking for one thing too many, as the team (rounded out by Kate Beckinsale, Lisa Edelstein, and Nathan Fillon) must deal with troublesome twins, meddling mothers, and corrupt cops under Marie Lena’s thumb. On top of all that, Grace has to deal with the added stress of trying to avoid coming out - as a con artist, rather than a real artist - to her girlfriend Heather (Alex Kingston). Having the mob put a target on the back of Grace and everyone she loves may make that slightly more difficult, however.
The ultimate heist movie, Nemesis promises plenty of intrigue, romance, and non-stop action. You’ll be on the edge of your seat as you wait to see if they can figure out...how to rob the mob!
Grace King
played by Lena Headey
Grace King grew up on Navy bases all over the world, her family never stayed long in one place so even to this day she has wanderlust. Her parents got divorced when she was young and she first learned how good she was at conning people by playing on her parents' guilt about the divorce. She moved on to teachers and then onto Navy personnel and she discovered there was no con she couldn't pull.
Marie Lena McDoogan
played by Mary McDonnell
Marie Lena was the only child of the nefarious kingpin Jack "The Fist" McDoogan and she spent much of her childhood learning how to hustle and run a good con. By the time she was 11 she could shoot the cap of a bottle of cola from 100 paces. She was only 17 when her father was gunned down by a member of the rival family the O'Gradys. It took her only three weeks to track down and kill every member of the O'Grady family and got herself declared the Queen of the Irish Mob. As an homage to her father's pseudonym she is sometimes referred to as "Stands with the Fist" because, supposedly, she always invokes her father's name right before she kills someone.
Isadora "Izzie" Bellows
played by Kate Beckinsale
Izzie Bellows grew up rich and pretty and whatever wasn't handed to her on a silver platter she learned to acquire with a five finger discount. She quickly tired of sparkling jewels and silky dresses and her interests turned to car theft pretty quickly and from car theft to all out cons. During one of her cons she met Grace and the two instantly connected, having a brief and torrid affair before they decided they were better off as friends and teammates than lovers. Izzie has a healthy trust fund but also supplements her income with con money, which is really more of a hobby than a necessity.
Felicity Cohen
played by Lisa Edelstein
Felicity Cohen was a grad student at NYU working on her PhD in computer programming and database security who was working at the MoMA as computer security programer when she caught Grace and Izzie breaking in. Much to their surprise, instead of turning them in, she asked if they needed a third. While Grace and Izzie are fulltime con artists, Felicity is the only group member who maintains a legitimate job as a systems analyst for Macintosh.
Thomas "Tom" Whitman
played by Nathan Filion
Tom Whitman was the most recent addition to their con group when they realized it was becoming necessary for them to have an arms specialist. He's a weekend Steam Punk hobbyist which helps hone his skill of being able to make a weapon out of anything. He'd been mostly working as an independent contractor but was more than happy to accept a permanent position with Grace, Izzie & Felicity and to be able to depend on a steady paycheck.
Petra & Vladimir Dorofeyev
played by Stana Katic and Christian Bale
Petra and Vladimir Dorofeyev are ruthless and sociopathic killers but they lack the focus to create their own criminal enterprise and were happy to join up with Marie Lena. Having grown up in bleak communist Russia they were accustomed to following orders and the structure and steady work that Marie Lena provides them makes them fiercely loyal to her. They work equally well as a team or individually. Despite being fluent in English and having been stateside for nearly twenty years they still have very thick Russian accents. They are the crown jewels of Marie Lena's arsenal and as such she gives them a lot of leeway and pretty much lets them do whatever they want. However, they never stray very far from Marie Lena and she never worries about attacks from her enemies because she knows that they would both die protecting her. Neither twin has shown much, if any, interest in having a personal life or doing anything outside of the mafia, including dating, so all free time is spent practicing their techniques with various weapons.
Heather Longfellow
played by Alex Kingston
Heather Longfellow is a professor of Archaeology at Columbia University and she met Grace at a gala at the Gugenheim. Of course, Heather was their to fundraise and Grace was there to steal... Grace would probably have said she didn't believe in love at first sight until she saw Heather. She was smitten by everything about the blonde. Heather is blissfully unaware that the woman she's been dating for the better part of a year isn't actually an art dealer and Grace is loath to come clean. Heather is a relatively independent person and had always valued her personal space but has recently been trying to test the waters of her and Grace moving in together, which could either make or break their relationship.
Nora & Diane Cohen
played by Meryl Streep and Anjelica Huston
Nora and Diane Cohen are Felicity's two moms. Nora is the original verklempt Jewish mother whereas Diane is a little bit more laid back and quiet. Nora is Felicity's birth mother but the donor was Diane's brother so that Felicity would be related to both of them. Diane is a clinical therapist and Nora is a book editor. They met in college in 1964 and in 1967 after Diane was well on her way through her education she proposed to Nora and they had a small commitment ceremony and they decided have a child in 1969. At different times they both stayed home with Felicity and then when she was school aged they both went back to full time work. When gay marriage was legalized in New York they jumped at the chance to make it official (not that they didn't consider their marriage official...). Though Nora seems to be constantly looking for her glasses and Diane seems to be too aloof to notice much of anything most of the time they have long since figured out what their daughter and her friends have been up to. Since most of the cons involve stealing from the rich and corrupt they haven't seen any reason to make a huge stink about it and have actually attempted to help many times.
