Not difficult to do. However, why not sew them to the underskirt instead?

The one thing you should do first is decide what shape/size you want the pockets, so you can figure out how/where to add them.

Hmm, yeah then i wouldnt have to really be careful with how clean or pretty the stitching is cause you wouldn't see it from the outside then.

It was more of a hypothetical but I think once I finish up the new bodice and underskirt I may consider at least a few pockets on the new skirt. I need to repair my old one still from Midrealm 12th night when I couldn't find my hoops. ; ;

Or just actually sew a period pocket, silly.

<.< It's under the skirt >.> and in all honesty probably holding flasks.

besides, i thought things like dresses dont technically have pockets. pants and coats i can see, but skirts?

Period pockets are pouches hung from a belt, generally speaking. Under layers, you could "fake" the belt hanging and just sew it from the waistband. That helps distribute the weight.

"Lucy Locket lost her pocket..."

Pockets were originally like little bags tied on to an outfit. They can be quite decorative.

It was always traditional to put weights of various types along the open edges, and that included things like knives, flasks, tools and other things you may need. The weight helped the flow of the garment and held things that the chain-type chatelaine could not.

If you put a pocket on the underskirt/chemise, it can 'bonk' against you as you walk instead of just being part of the flow.

Just my opinion, though.
