Despite there being a million match-3 games out there, there are two things I'm having trouble finding. I wonder if you can help!
1. Mathematical data about Bejeweled-type games. If I randomly fill an n x n grid with gems of k colors, how many moves will there ( Read more... )

Not quite a match-3 game, but something to spark your interest is Knightfall 2, where you remove colored blocks, tilt the playing field, and try to get your guy to run over monsters.

That's actually totally within the category I was looking for (not that I know exactly what that category is). Thanks!

One recent match-3 "plus" game is Starjeweled, a Starcrat 2 mod.

It's team versus play. You play bejeweled but spend the energy (points) that gives you to summon Starcraft units (you have like 10 to choose from) or cast "Spells" which then go and fight the other guy's units. Units are strong against some units and weak against others. I don't think you can actually control the units once they're summoned - they just move up and fight - if they get to the other end of the long skinny board they attack the other guy/team's base and if you beat the base you win the game.

The second time I played it I got accused of cheating. ^_^

The "match on each tile once" mechanic doesn't add any real strategy, to me (though I agree that category of games is more fun than raw Bejeweled). I'm looking for something with substantial decisions other than "which tile should I move next?" and "which general area of the board do I still need to work on?"

(And buying decorations also isn't a substantial decision, in game terms. They don't do anything!)

Am I missing something by not downloading the full version?

I was thinking of the chained tiles and the weird off corners, which require actual planning ahead....

[sorry for the dupes, lj was being weird]
