I'm curious and considering adding to my SCA wardrobe. Currently my persona is Norse, specifically from what is present day Finland. So these are my questions

I'm not a Norseperson, nor do I play one on TV but...melaniesuzanneJanuary 3 2006, 22:35:19 UTC
Weaves: I'm still trying to figure this one out for my own time period. I'm afraid I can't help too much. There might be useful information in the resources on the Vikings Online site. Also, take a look through Mistress Isabel's site. I don't *think* she'll be at 12th Night, unfortunately, but she's a very friendly person and seems to enjoy when people pick her brains.
You will want linen and wool, though. Those are pretty much definites. The quality of the weave will depend upon the station of your portrayal.
Colours: Here's a dark age colour wheel of dyed wool using, as the site says, authentic dyes from Sweden. Those aren't the only colours available, but it does appear that reds and yellows (in Sweden anyway) were the most easily achieved.
My favourite places to purchase wools are www.fabric.com (they run a LOT of sales) and www.denverfabrics.com; www.fabrics-store.com is great for linen. I've had little luck in brick-and-mortar fabric stores who have a lot of linen-look and nylon/acrylic "wools".
I personally haven't researched Norse stuff, but I have friends who do, and they have a website too - with a whole lot of links at the bottom for even more searching fun.
With the reservation that there are differences between norse and finnish/baltic costume, which is seen in the archeological finds I still recommend this site. The reconstructions are based on the latest research in the field and comissioned by the national Museum for Antiquities. You may want to ask about specifically finnish costume in the english section of the forum at the same museum. There are a few archaeologists who have been working a lot with viking age stuff there and they will know more.
