It looks like you managed to friend me, and a few other people. Sometime when we're both online, I can try to walk you through it. You don't have AIM, do you? That would be the easiest way to help you -- I've helped a few other people that way.
I'm especially confused about the commenting thing. That shouldn't be a problem, although I do know that some people locked all their entries, even their "Friends Only" entries so that no comments could be made -- they did that before DH came out so they wouldn't be spoiled accidentally. Most should have fixed that by now, though ...
And the background thing is a little trickier to explain. My favourite community is premade_ljs. You have to join the community in order to see the posts, and then the mod of the community has to approve you, but she's really fast about that. I'd do that first thing. She's made lots of different LJ layouts, and she gives very straightforward instructions for setting it all up.
I'd also read through the FAQ page on LJ. That's ( ... )

I've PMed you back. =] But yeah, I figured out the layouts [I just had to use a different browser.] It's just the comment thing that's confusing me.
I'm off to join the community to see some of the layouts!

*tackle hugs* I'm so glad you're on LJ, and so sorry I can't help you! I have no clue what I'm doing, either. I picked one LJ design and have stuck with it because it's simple.
Hopefully, Abigail can walk you through it. *crosses fingers*

I'm not sure what you mean by not letting you add comments...I mean, as long as you're logged in it shouldn't be a problem, so I'm not sure. Anyway, so if you comment to a person's LJ, they'll know you want to be added, and they'll add you. But if you want to add them, then at the top of the LJ, in the black bar, click 'add them as a friend' when you are viewing their LJ.
I'm not sure if I helped any, told you things you already knew, or confused you even more, but I wasn't really getting what you didn't know how to do in the first place...*sighs*

All you do is go to their journal, and at the top, you know that bar that has your icon and link to your journal on top? Well somewhere in that bar, towards the middle, there is a link to the person's journal, and ther is an "add as friend" botton. click that.

go to google and look up LiveJournal layouts
under web...and the websites should give you instructions on how to set up the one you like.
