Lenny Bruce is not afraid...

About 3-1/2 hours ago, we had a wee temblor here in the Bay Area. Nothing huge (certainly not by California standards), but it is the first time I've crouched down in a doorway in a long while. I was worried about the folks in San Francisco, but it turns out the epicenter was in Alum Rock (near San Jose). No casualties or serious damage ( Read more... )

Gah! I'm so glad it wasn't major and both you and Casa Fen are okay (ditto AFs Spike and Lex).

I've never been in an earthquake, but the thought of them frightens the excrement out of me. It's the one factor Matt's going to have to overcome in convincing me to someday move permanently to Cali. Otherwise, I'm SO there.

Oh, Spike and Lex were totally cool under pressure ;-)

Y'know, the baby earthquakes I experienced growing up were actually fun. No, really. Loma Prieta was more serious, of course, but Northridge scared the CRAP out of me. After Northridge, every tremor, no matter the size, triggers a wee frisson of fear.

Still, I've seen aftermath pictures of tornadoes and hurricanes, and I'll take earthquake country any day! I hope that you and Matt will, too :D

I'm glad that all is well with you in the wake of the quake (rhyme totally intended)! I'm actually impressed with myself that I've been in the ONE earthquake, considering the coast I live on...of course, because of that, none of us ACTUALLy thought that it was an earthquake at the time. Heh.

:)

Oh, interesting, thanks for the link. That one was a mid-5-pointer, too! I'm always curious about "rare" quakes. It must feel... odd. Well, MORE odd, heh. I'm glad that it wasn't a scary experience for you, and hope that your first quake is also your last!

Yes, surprisingly enough, we have had earthquakes in Michigan. The one I remember was when I was a kid. My brother, sister and I were on the ground floor of our house and didn't feel anything. My mom was upstairs and she yelled at us to stop rough housing. We were really surprised because we were being very quiet, literally having a tea party. (We were peculiar sometimes.) On the news that night, we learned that there had been a tiny earthquake in our area. So in my Midwestern experience, earthquake means "Mom yells at you for something you didn't do" rather than the terrifying, "quick! to the doorway" thing I see on TV.

I'm always curious about earthquakes that aren't on the West Coast. I mean, I know that the rest of the country isn't immune to them, but it is rare, isn't it?

But awww, in jenelopeLand, earthquake = tea party + angry mom ;-) I hope it stays that way!

As ever, I'm glad you're safe.

We had a quake in NJ back in the 80s. I have no memories of it, but our old house had a split foundation, and we had these cracks in the hallway walls that would always re-open no matter how many times we spackled, so I assume it was on the large side.

Well, damn. Through all the years and quakes, no building I ever lived in sustained any damage *knocks wood*

On a completely different note, I've been thinking about you, lately :) I suspect it's a combination of your b'day coming up (well, in a month) and BRADLEY BACK ON TV OMG!! I've missed him so much and he looks GOOD :D Yay!

Glad you're okay. Also glad to hear you follow safety guidelines and get in doorways when the situation calls for it!

Y'know, when you've grown up with them, you get a sense of where they are on the intensity scale. Still, I couldn't say exactly when a (lazy) body should leave the couch for the doorway. Probably at "Criminy, it's not stopping." ;-)

*Smooch!*
