A Not-So-Weird Student E-Mail

Apr 17, 2009 09:03

For the record, not all of the emails I receive contain copious verbal cowering.

"Dear Joe Davies,

I'm going to miss discussion today because I just found out that I was pregnant a few weeks ago, so I have to go for an ultra-sound this morning.

Sorry for missing class!
Thank you!

See, I think all these details point to the fact that they're making everything up. It's a rookie lying mistake - you spend so long obsessing on the lie that you over complicate it and over sell it, thinking that a bunch of glitzy showmanship will distract whomever you're trying to deceive. Whenever someone has a legitimate excuse they rarely launch into long-winded explanations because they don't have to; if someone wants more info they can give it without having to worry about making something up on the spot.

In short, I'd ask for copies of those ultrasounds if I were you...just in case.
