I love this idea - and her new one of wearing nothing that's not recycled and remade from her own wardrobe. Hey, I could do that! But then I'm not a shopaholic. The last real shopping spree I had was in the summer of 2005 (our last trip to the US) until this July when I went shopping with Mum. I was looking for a wedding outfit (which I ended up making for less than £25 - including the bag and the hat, but excluding the shoes which cost me £12), but I found a couple of shirts (one in the sale at M&S) and I bought a cardigan in the sales for £10 and a couple of M&S lightweight jumpers. Other than that I bought two lightweight black sweaters (slightly different designs) from M&S mail order over the winter.
I have, however, bought a lovely pattern for an Inuit parka which I intend to make from fleece that I bought six or seven years ago and never used.
As you know, I do love to shop but everything I have, except for a few things, is second hand. I saw on her website she'd made her own pair of shoes from an old pair of leather trousers which I would LOVE to try to do myself. I'm not much for sewing though I did make some very nice curtains and an awesome screen for the sliding door in our van before the trip. The curtains are not exactly right (they let in too much light and are too easy to see through even though I lined them) but the screen really turned out great. It has a curved zipper and everything! I'm really proud of it. We were house sitting for friends and the woman of the couple let me use her late-model Bernina which was easily the best machine I've ever used. Sewing with that thing was a joy
( ... )
Berninas are truly the Rolls Royce of sewing machines. I love mine even though it's 30 years old and only the basic model. When I was designing and sewing for a living it did everything I ever asked of it and never gave me any trouble - and even after several years tucked away in a corner it performs as new.
Thanks for the praise re: the curved zipper. I was pretty impressed myself that it turned out at all let alone as well as it did. Sewing netting was strange enough but then adding in a zipper- well, I used a LOT of pins! It did give me a lot of confidence in trying more projects. Now if I only had a machine and a place to set it up...
LOL you know the last time we went shopping....and I just reallized that the last new piece of clothing I bought is about 4yrs old I think. It was a really pretty top on sale in New York...heheh had to have one something from there. Hehe and my *good* jeans just turned 8yrs old I think... sheesh.
But my closet rule still stand....Two things out, one thing in and usually something I have made or bought second hand.
Hehe if you want we can set up sewing machines on the dinning room table when you get home.... Dueling Sewers...lol
