The fun thing about religion is the typical approach is:

#Define what you believe as perfect
If (someone does something "good"){
Show how it falls into line with what you're saying;
}
else if (they acribe to your religion but don't like what they did) {
Show how they aren't really your religion anyway;

Since the above causes your correlation with unequivocally good things to be 100%, you use this leverage to convince others your approaches to controversial or semicontroversial things are good and just.
