It's because you're not 'pushing' an opinion or argument. The discussion or monologue or whatever it is you write, becomes interesting and stimulating when there is 'drama'. Drama is achieved by someone wanting something from someone else (who usually is leaning a different way). Wether that is to change an opposing or non-existant opinion, get approval, or inform someone who is uninformed, there is always an aim in dialogue.
"No use preaching to the converted" - you never get anywhere, they already know what you're talking about so you don't explain or argue any points. The conversation goes "yeah....yeah... ah ha.. i know!.... i agree... mmmm..." etc.
In this case, you seem to be reflecting and talking more to yourself than to the students, and thus not really needing to get across the dramatic bits - why and how the experience changed you (the bits you'd explain to someone if this was a conversation to a friend who wasn't with you).
