Re: Cameras tomorrow?expresosMay 22 2005, 22:11:06 UTC
although i can't speak to what will be the current policy with regard to the cameras, the original proposal was that they would not be active during school hours.
There is no sort of word to sum up my feelings about this. Upset doesn't even begin to cover it. I find it troubling and bothersome that people feel a need to participate in such activities.
What's worse is that I know the actors were on campus yesterday at like 0600 cleaning until the play or something... But it couldn't have been them, because they were supervised...
Fuck. Thanks for posting this Matt - it really sucks to find out about but now I feel like I have a jump on doing something about it. Here is the very tentative Earth Service Corps plan:
If we can get this approved, after school on Thursday there will be at least 150 trees available to be planted by anyone who is upset by or even just disapproving of the vandalism. (I realize this conflicts with the Red Forum but this is the only date that otherwise works.) Also Cynthia and I are writing a letter to the editor of the Review which we will open up for signatures.
I am working to comprehend the action of cutting all these trees but now I can't be angry only confused. Trees are such a weird target.
And for KC's record: the actors were there the day before and were actually planting things. And weeding. And picking up litter. And without access to any tree-destroying implements or bad intentions.
About the tree-planting Thursday afternoon, I was thinking along the same lines, and will make myself available for anything I can help with, either to get it approved or to gather support for it.
Update: We will not be planting trees on Thursday because the trees we have are too small to replace the ones cut down. Instead, we are starting fund raising efforts, including a letter home, donation box to be put out at lunches, and a possible tee shirt sale, to pay for the $7000 it will cost for the appropriate replacement trees. The trees we have, though, will be planted some time soon in a different part of the school and you or anyone else is welcome to come and help. We'll announce it.
Thanks so much for your interest and motivation, Mandy!

Way to go, tree-cutter(s)! Now I have to decide what I think about having those cameras around...

I love trees. And those trees have memories, too.
This hurts.
